Pb_1.83Mg_0.29Nb_1.71O_6.39 (PMN) crystallizing in a cubic pyrochlore structure exhibits, as the first dielectrics with pyrochlore structure, typical feature of quantum paraelectrics - its permittivity continuously increases on cooling and levels off below ~ 30K, without any signature of a structural phase transition. Broad-band dielectric spectra do not show any dielectric dispersion in the real part of permittivity up to 8.8 GHz. THz and infrared spectra reveal a soft polar...

We review some of the current research on two of the ultra-high piezoelectric relaxors Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) and Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PZN). The discovery of a monoclinic phase in Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (PZT) in 1999 by Noheda et al. forced a reassessment of the structural symmetries found near the morphotropic phase boundary in PZT, as well as in the PbTiO3 (PT) doped systems PZN-PT, and PMN-PT. All three systems are now known to have nearly identical phase diagrams that exhibit a rhom...

Relaxor ferroelectric PbMg_1/3Ta_2/3O_3 ceramics and thin films were investigated by means of broad-band dielectric, time-domain terahertz (THz) and Fourier-transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy in the frequency range 100 Hz - 90 THz at temperatures 100 - 490 K, the THz and IR spectra were studied from 20 to 900K. Diffused and strongly temperature dependent peak in the complex permittivity is caused by a dielectric relaxation due to the dynamics of polar clusters. The relaxati...

Hyper-Raman scattering experiments allowed collecting the spectra of the lowest F1u-symmetry mode of PbTiO3 crystal in the paraelectric phase up to 930K as well as down to about 1K above the phase transition. It is realized that this mode is fully responsible for the Curie-Weiss behavior of its dielectric permittivity above Tc. Near the phase transition, this phonon frequency softens down to 17 cm-1 and its spectrum can be well modeled as a response of a single damped harmoni...

Neutron and x-ray scattering studies on relaxor ferroelectric systems Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN), Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PMN), and their solid solutions with PbTiO$_3$ (PT) have shown that inhomogeneities and disorder play important roles in the materials properties. Although a long-range polar order can be established at low temperature - sometimes with the help of an external electric field; short-range local structures called the ``polar nano-regions'' (PN...

The relaxors Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PZN) and Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) have very similar properties based on the dielectric response around the critical temperature $T_{c}$ (defined by the structural transition under the application of an electric field). It has been widely believed that these materials are quite different below $T_{c}$ with the unit cell of PMN remaining cubic while in PZN the low temperature unit cell is rhombohedral in shape. However,...

Neutron elastic diffuse scattering experiments performed on Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PZN) and on its solid solution with PbTiO3(PT), known as PZN-xPT, with x=4.5% and 9% around many reflections show that diffuse scattering is observed around reflections with mixed indices in the transverse and diagonal directions only. From the width of the diffuse scattering peak a correlation length is extracted. In PZN, we have reported that the diffuse scattering is more extended in the transv...

We report the spontaneous decay of a soft, optical phonon in a solid. Using neutron spectroscopy, we find that specific phonon lifetimes in the relaxor PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ are anomalously short within well-defined ranges of energy and momentum. This behavior is independent of ferroelectric order and occurs when the optical phonon with a specific energy and momentum can kinematically decay into two acoustic phonons with lower phase velocity. We interpret the well-kno...

Dielectric investigations of the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 crystal were performed in the frequency domain at 10^(-4) 10^5 Hz. In the ergodic relaxor phase two overlapping relaxation processes obeying the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts law, exp[-(t/tau)^beta], and the Curievon Schweidler law, t^(-n), respectively, were found and parameterized. The values of beta, n and 1/tau tend to zero at 211 K following the Vogel-Fulcher law, pointing to the glassy freezing of the d...

We report neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystal PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ doped with 32\% PbTiO$_{3}$, a relaxor ferroelectric that lies close to the morphotropic phase boundary. When cooled under an electric field $\mathbf{E} \parallel$ [001] into tetragonal and monoclinic phases, the scattering cross section from transverse acoustic (TA) phonons polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$ weakens and shifts to higher energy relative to that under zero-field-...
