The surface free energy of ideal hard rods near curved hard surfaces is determined to second order in curvature for surfaces of general shape. In accordance with previous results for spherical and cylindrical surfaces it is found that this quantity is non-analytical when one of the principal curvatures changes signs. This prohibits writing it in the common Helfrich form. It is shown that the non-analytical terms are the same for any aspect ratio of the rods. These results are...

This review reports some theoretical results on the Geometry of membranes. The governing equations to describe equilibrium configurations of lipid vesicles, lipid membranes with free edges, and chiral lipid membranes are derived from the variation of free energies of these structures. Some analytic solutions to these equations and their corresponding configurations are also shown.

A variety of models for the membrane-mediated interaction of particles in lipid membranes, mostly well-established in theoretical physics, is reviewed from a mathematical perspective. We provide mathematically consistent formulations in a variational framework, relate apparently different modelling approaches in terms of successive approximation, and investigate existence and uniqueness. Numerical computations illustrate that the new variational formulations are directly acce...

Particles bound to an interface interact because they deform its shape. The stresses that result are fully encoded in the geometry and described by a divergence-free surface stress tensor. This stress tensor can be used to express the force on a particle as a line integral along any conveniently chosen closed contour that surrounds the particle. The resulting expression is exact (i.e., free of any "smallness" assumptions) and independent of the chosen surface parametrization....

We consider a model of a biomembrane with attached proteins. The membrane is represented by a near spherical continuous surface and attached proteins are described as discrete rigid structures which attach to the membrane at a finite number of points. The resulting surface minimises a quadratic elastic energy (obtained by a perturbation of the Canham-Helfrich energy) subject to the point constraints which are imposed by the attachment of the proteins. We calculate the derivat...

We derive and analyse an energy to model lipid raft formation on biological membranes involving a coupling between the local mean curvature and the local composition. We apply a perturbation method recently introduced by Fritz, Hobbs and the first author to describe the geometry of the surface as a graph over an undeformed Helfrich energy minimising surface. The result is a surface Cahn-Hilliard functional coupled with a small deformation energy We show that suitable minimise...

In this paper we present a discrete model governing the deformation of a convex regular polygon subjected not to cross a given flat rigid surface, on which it initially lies in correspondence of one point only. First, we set up the model in the form of a set of variational inequalities posed over a non-empty, closed and convex subset of a suitable Euclidean space. Secondly, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solution. The model provides a simplified illustration of p...

Membranes are an important subject of study in physical chemistry and biology. They can be considered as material surfaces with a surface energy depending on the curvature tensor. Usually, mathematical models developed in the literature consider the dependence of surface energy only on mean curvature with an added linear term for Gauss curvature. Therefore, for closed surfaces the Gauss curvature term can be eliminated because of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. In [18], the depende...

The interplay of membrane proteins is vital for many biological processes, such as cellular transport, cell division, and signal transduction between nerve cells. Theoretical considerations have led to the idea that the membrane itself mediates protein self-organization in these processes through minimization of membrane curvature energy. Here, we present a combined experimental and numerical study in which we quantify these interactions directly for the first time. In our ex...

A model system has been recently developed to study adhesion. It consists of a giant lipid bilayer vesicle with reconstituted lipo-polymers (repellers) as well as with lipo-ligands recognized by receptors covering the substrate. Adhesion in this system is studied theoretically. The state of the weak adhesion is shown to be dominated by the competition of the gravitation and the undulation repulsion between the membrane and the substrate. The state of the tight adhesion is for...
