We report controlled local manipulation of single vortices by low temperature magnetic force microscope (MFM) in a thin film of superconducting Nb. We are able to position the vortices in arbitrary configurations and to measure the distribution of local depinning forces. This technique opens up new possibilities for the characterization and use of vortices in superconductors.

A highlighting feature of Majorana bound states in two-dimensional topological superconductors is that they gain a phase factor of $\pi$ upon being orbited by a vortex. This work focuses on the vortex degree of freedom itself and demonstrates that the change in the Majorana state is accompanied by a fermion parity change within the vortex. Such a parity flip is interpreted as a higher dimensional analog of the fermion parity pump mechanism in superconducting wires as well as ...

We study force-free configurations of Abrikosov flux lines in the line-liquid and line-crystal limit, near the melting transition at H_m. We show that the condition for zero force configurations can be solved by appealing to the structure of chiral liquid crystalline phases.

The vortex lattice with the superconducting and normal state charge carriers fractions may be regarded as three independent subsystems mutually connected by interactions. The equation of motion for these three subsystems must be solved simultaneously. In this way a new consistent theory of the vortex dynamics is obtained and the magnetoconductivity calculated.

We predict a new effect in condensed matter surface magnetization of the vortex phase of a superconductor induced by electric field. The magnetized superconductor should be one of the plates of a plane capacitor on which a voltage has to be applied. Applying alternating voltage to the capacitor, electrostatic induction leads to oscillations of the magnetic moment which has to be measured by electromotive force inducted in a detector coil. The derived explicit formula for the ...

We show that the entropy per quantum vortex per layer in superconductors in external magnetic fields is bounded by the universal value k_B ln 2, which explains puzzling results of recent experiments on the Nernst effect.

We outline the basic ideas of the topological mechanisms of superconductivity. A gauged model of correlated electronic system where a topological fluid is formed as a result of a strong interaction is discussed.
