The recent report of the observation of Bose-Einstein condensation in atomic Hydrogen, characterized by an "anomalous" density spectrum, is shown to be in agreement with the prediction of the existence of two condensates for temperatures lower than a well defined temperature (which for Hydrogen is $ 105~ \mu K $), based on the QED coherent interaction in a gas of ultracold atoms at a density $n > n_0 (n_0=(1/\lambda)^3, \lambda$ being the wave-length of the e.m. modes resonan...

We report the observation of co-existing Bose-Einstein condensate and Fermi gas in a magnetic trap. With a very small fraction of thermal atoms, the 7Li condensate is quasi-pure and in thermal contact with a 6Li Fermi gas. The lowest common temperature is 0.28 muK = 0.2(1) T_C = 0.2(1) T_F where T_C is the BEC critical temperature and T_F the Fermi temperature. Behaving as an ideal gas in the radial trap dimension, the condensate is one-dimensional.

Strongly correlated Fermi systems are among the most intriguing, best experimentally studied and fundamental systems in physics. There is, however, lack of theoretical understanding in this field of physics. The ideas based on the concepts like Kondo lattice and involving quantum and thermal fluctuations at a quantum critical point have been used to explain the unusual physics. Alas, being suggested to describe one property, these approaches fail to explain the others. This m...

The aim of this review paper is to expose a new state of matter exhibited by strongly correlated Fermi systems represented by various heavy-fermion (HF) metals, two-dimensional liquids like $\rm ^3He$, compounds with quantum spin liquids, quasicrystals, and systems with one-dimensional quantum spin liquid. We name these various systems HF compounds, since they exhibit the behavior typical of HF metals. In HF compounds at zero temperature the unique phase transition, dubbed th...

The Bose-Einstein condensation of atoms can be conveniently formulated as a problem in thermal quantum field theory. There are many properties of the equilibrium system and its collective excitations that can be studied experimentally. The remarkable experimental control over all aspects of the system make it an ideal testing ground for the methods of thermal field theory.

The effect of a quantum phase transition associated with the appearance of the fermion condensate in an electron liquid on the properties of superconductors is considered. It is shown that the electron system in both superconducting and normal states exhibits characteristic features of a quantum protectorate after the point of this fermion-condensation quantum phase transition. The single-particle spectrum of a superconductor can be represented by two straight lines correspon...

In this paper, we present evidence for a liquid-like phase in systems of many interacting Bosons at intermediate densities. The interacting Bose gas has been studied extensively in the low and high density regimes, in which interactions do not play a physically significant role, and the system behaves similarly to the ideal quantum gas. Instead, we will turn our attention to the intermediate density regime, and report evidence that the system enters a strongly correlated phas...

Employing the duality between the momentum distribution $n(p)$ and density distribution $\rho(r)$, problems of theory of systems with flat bands, pinned to the Fermi surface, are discussed. We propose that the Lifshitz topological phase transition associated with the formation of additional pockets of the Fermi surface is the precursor of fermion condensation.

We review recent developments in the field of ultracold atomic Fermi gases. As the cold atom system evolves from BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), the behavior of the thermodynamics, and the particle density profiles evolves smoothly in a way which can be well understood theoretically. In the interesting "unitary" regime, we show that these and other data necessarily requires the introduction of a pseudogap in the fermionic spectrum which exhibits many striking similar...

The purpose of this paper is to review some of the dynamic and superfluid features exhibited by ultracold Fermi gases with special emphasis on the effects of the external confinement which will be assumed in most cases of harmonic shape.
