Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on (110)-oriented thin films of Ca-overdoped Y$_{0.95}$Ca$_{0.05}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ at 4.2K, to probe the local evolution of Andreev$-$Saint-James surface states in a c-axis magnetic field. In zero field, we observed conductance spectra with spontaneously-split peaks and spectra with unsplit zero-bias peaks. The former showed enhanced splitting with field, and the latter showed threshold splitting above finite fields. Alt...

We report the results of a cryogenic study of the modification of YBa2Cu3O7-delta surface electronic properties with the probe of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). A negative voltage applied to the sample during STM tunneling is found to modify locally the conductance of the native degraded surface layer. When the degraded layer is removed by etching, the effect disappears. An additional surface effect is identified using Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy in combination w...

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of (110) $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}/Au$ bi-layers reveal a proximity effect markedly different from the conventional one. While proximity-induced mini-gaps rarely appear in the Au layer, the Andreev bound states clearly penetrate into the metal. Zero bias conductance peaks are measured on Au layers thinner than 7 nm with magnitude similar to those detected on the bare superconductor films. The peaks then decay abruptly with Au thickness and disappe...

Motivated by recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurement that superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) exhibits a $d_{x^2-y^2} + s$-symmetry gap, we show possible quasi-one-dimensional modulations of local density of states in YBCO. These aniostropic gap and defect induced stripe structures are most conspicuous at higher biases and arise due to the nesting effect associated with a Fermi liquid. Observation of these spectra by scanning tunnel...

We consider the problem of local tunneling into cuprate superconductors, combining model based calculations for the superconducting order parameter with wavefunction information obtained from first principles electronic structure. For some time it has been proposed that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra do not reflect the properties of the superconducting layer in the CuO$_2$ plane directly beneath the STM tip, but rather a weighted sum of spatially proximate states...

We report a scanning tunneling spectroscopy investigation of polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 having a superconducting transition at 52 K. On large regions of the sample surface the tunneling spectra exhibited V-shaped gap structures with no coherence peaks, indicating degraded surface properties. In some regions, however, the coherence peaks were clearly observed, and the V-shaped gaps could be fit to the theory of tunneling into a d-wave superconductor, yielding gap values betwe...

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) studies reveal long-range spatial homogeneity and predominantly $d_{x^2-y^2}$-pairing spectral characteristics in under- and optimally doped $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ superconductors, whereas STS on $\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.9934}Zn_{0.0026}Mg_{0.004})_3O_{6.9}$ exhibits {\it microscopic} spatial modulations and strong scattering near the Zn or Mg impurity sites, together with global suppression of the pairing potential. In contrast, in overdope...

We report on an \textit{ab}-anisotropy of $J_{c \parallel b}/J_{c \parallel a}% \cong 1.8$ and $I_{c}R_{n \parallel b}/I_{c}R_{n \parallel a}\cong 1.2$ in ramp-edge junctions between untwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ and $s$% -wave Nb. For these junctions, the angle $\theta $ with the YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ crystal b-axis is varied as a single parameter. The $R_{n}$A($\theta$)-dependence presents 2-fold symmetry. The minima in $I_{c}R_{n}$ at $\theta \cong 50^{\circ}$ sugg...

The polarized femtosecond spectroscopies obtained from well characterized (100) and (110) YBa2Cu3O7-\delta thin films are reported. This bulk-sensitive spectroscopy, combining with the well-textured samples, serves as an effective probe to quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in different crystalline orientations. The significant anisotropy in both the magnitude of the photoinduced transient reflectivity change and the characteristic relaxation time indicates that the nature of ...

Early electron tunneling experiments with the Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 measured \Delta = 16-28 meV, while bulk optical experiments measured \Delta = 43-45 meV. We report new tunneling measurements of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 single crystals and c-axis oriented thin films, where the measured \Delta values on both sample types cover the range of 24-50 meV, with more than 70% of the junctions displaying \Delta > 30 meV. This work resolves the inconsistency between previously published results of tunn...
