We calculated the infrared conductivity spectrum of orbitally ordered LaMnO$_3$ in phonon frequency and overtone frequency ranges. We considered orbital exchange, Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling, and phonon--phonon coupling. The fundamental excitation of the phonon-coupled orbiton was only Raman active, not infrared active, while its overtone modes were both Raman and infrared active. Our calculations reproduced the small peaks near 1300 cm$^{-1}$ observed both in Raman ...

Raman scattering experiments on stoichiometric, Mott-insulating LaTiO$_3$ over a wide range of excitation energies reveal a broad electronic continuum which is featureless in the paramagnetic state, but develops a gap of $\sim 800$ cm$^{-1}$ upon cooling below the N\'eel temperature $T_N = 146$ K. In the antiferromagnetic state, the spectral weight below the gap is transferred to well-defined spectral features due to spin and orbital excitations. Low-energy phonons exhibit pr...

Chen Ang, Bhalla and Cross [Phys. Rev. B 64, 184104 (2001)] have studied the low-frequency (20 Hz -- 100 kHz) dielectric dispersion of the KTaO3 crystal under a dc electric field. Performing fits of the electric field dependence they came to conclusion that an appreciable contribution to the dielectric permittivity originates from polar clusters. In this Comment we show that the dielectric permittivity at low frequencies (100 Hz -- 1 MHz) equals to that in the THz region, clo...

Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic insulating double-perovskite compound La2NiMnO6, which has been reported to exhibit interesting magnetic field sensitive dielectric anomaly as a function of temperature. Our study reveals existence of very soft infra-red active phonons that couple strongly with spins at the Ni and Mn sites through modification of the super-exchange interaction. We suggest t...

Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we study the optical conductivity sigma(omega) of insulating LaSrMnO4 in the energy range of 0.75-5.8 eV from 15 to 330 K. The layered structure gives rise to a pronounced anisotropy. A multipeak structure is observed in sigma_1^a(omega) (2, 3.5, 4.5, 4.9, and 5.5 eV), while only one peak is present at 5.6 eV in sigma_1^c(omega). We employ a local multiplet calculation and obtain (i) an excellent description of the optical data, (ii) a detail...

Synchrotron infrared measurements were conducted over the range 100 to 8000 cm-1 on a self-doped LaxMnO3-d (x~~0.8) film. From these measurements we determined the conductivity, the effective number of free carriers, and the specific phonon modes as a function of frequency. While the metal-insulator transition temperature (TMI) and the magnetic ordering temperature (TC) approximately coincide, the free carrier density onset occurs at a significantly lower temperature (~~45 K ...

New dielectric transitions are observed at common temperatures 32K and 245K, in isostructural $La_{2}CuO_{4+x}$ and $La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4},$ that are signatures of local lattice (octahedral) instabilities. The present dielectric transitions reveal new aspects of the phase diagram of the perovskite cuprates and nickelates. They suggest that competition and coexistence of superconductivity with dielectricity occurs that is analogous to that between superconductivity and anti-...

We report magneto-transport properties of heterointerfaces between the Mott insulator LaTiO3 and the band insulator SrTiO3 in a delta-doping geometry. At low temperatures, we have found a strong nonlinearity in the magnetic field dependence of the Hall resistivity, which can be effectively controlled by varying the temperature and the electric field. We attribute this effect to multichannel conduction of interfacial charges generated by an electronic reconstruction. In partic...

We observe a distinct anomaly in dielectric permittivity (epsilon') as well as relaxation time (tao_0) versus temperature (T) pattern at the antiferromagnetic transition point (T_N) in single crystal of LaMnO3. The equivalent circuit analysis of the impedance spectra across T_N reveals clear anomaly in the capacitive component C_0 at T_N. Since no structural transition takes place across T_N, the anomaly in tao_0 and C_0 at T_N possibly signifies multiferroicity stemming from...

Direct experimental estimations of the low-energy ($1.5\sim10$ meV) complex dielectric constants spectrum and its temperature variation have been investigated for La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. At low temperatures, a clear Drude-term emerges. With increasing temperature, the scattering rate increases, while the plasma frequency decreases, derived both from a simple Drude model. Finally, a Drude-term submerges well below the in...
