We describe a technology for the fabrication of inexpensive and versatile mirrors through the use of a new type of nanoengineered optical material composed by the spreading of a self-assembling reflective colloidal film spread at the surface of a liquid. These new reflecting liquids offer interesting possibilities for astronomical instrumentation. For example, they can replace mercury in conventional rotating liquid mirrors. The main advantages offered include extremely low c...

We present results on the development of nanocomposite NiO:Au thin-film hydrogen sensors, which are able to detect hydrogen concentrations as low as 2 ppm in air, operating at low temperatures in the range 125-150C. Thin NiO films were sputter-deposited on oxidized silicon substrates. The structural, morphological, and nanomechanical properties of the films were investigated with respect to post-deposition annealing. Au nanoparticles were added on the NiO surface via pulsed l...

Functional tunability, environmental adaptability, and easy fabrication are highly desired properties in metasurfaces. Here we provide a tunable bilayer metasurface composed of two stacked identical dielectric magnetic mirrors, which are excited by the dominant electric dipole and other magnetic multipoles, exhibiting nonlocal electric field enhancement near the interface and high reflection. Differ from the tunability through the direct superposition of two structures with d...

Controlling thin film formation is technologically challenging. The knowledge of physical properties of the film and of the atoms in the surface vicinity can help improve control over the film growth. We investigate the use of the well-established selective reflection technique to probe the thin film during its growth, simultaneously monitoring the film thickness, the atom-surface van der Waals interaction and the vapor properties in the surface vicinity.

Mixing Mg with Ti leads to a hydride Mg(x)Ti(1-x)H2 with markedly improved (de)hydrogenation properties for x < 0.8, as compared to MgH2. Optically, thin films of Mg(x)Ti(1-x)H2 have a black appearance, which is remarkable for a hydride material. In this paper we study the structure and stability of Mg(x)Ti(1-x)H2, x= 0-1 by first-principles calculations at the level of density functional theory. We give evidence for a fluorite to rutile phase transition at a critical composi...

We report the first preparation of nanoporous Al-Mg alloy films by selective dissolution of Mg from a Mg-rich AlxMg1-x alloy. We show how to tune the stoichiometry, the porosity and the oxide contents in the final film by modulating the starting ratio between Al and Mg and the dealloying procedure. The obtained porous metal can be exploited for enhanced UV spectroscopy. In this respect, we experimentally demonstrate its efficacy in enhancing fluorescence and surface Raman sca...

We present the results of the characterization of Mg/Co periodic multilayers and their thermal stability for the EUV range. The annealing study is performed up to a temperature of 400\degree C. Images obtained by scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy clearly show the good quality of the multilayer structure. The measurements of the EUV reflectivity around 25 nm (~49 eV) indicate that the reflectivity decreases when the annealing tempe...

Metasurface-based color display and holography have greatly advanced the state of the art display technologies. To further enrich the metasurface functionalities, recently a lot of research endeavors have been made to combine these two display functions within a single device. However, so far such metasurfaces have remained static and lack tunability once the devices are fabricated. In this work, we demonstrate a dynamic dual-function metasurface device at visible frequencies...

Amidst the growing importance of hydrogen in a sustainable future, it is critical to develop coatings that can protect system components in reactive hydrogen environments. However, the prediction of the chemical stability of materials in hydrogen is not fully understood. In this study, we show that the work function is a key parameter determining the reducibility (i.e., de-nitridation) of transition metal nitrides (TMNs) in hydrogen radicals (H*). We demonstrate that when the...

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are the fastest-growing photovoltaic (PV) technology in the solar cell community and have reached an efficiency close to that of commercial silicon (Si) solar cells. The organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cell is an emerging PV technology and grabbed much attention due to its low cost, high efficiency, and ease of fabrication at lower temperatures 100-200 C by solution-processed spin coating or thermal evaporation techniques. Further, we i...
