We discuss dynamics of a slow quantum phase transition in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We determine analytically the scaling properties of the system magnetization and verify them with numerical simulations in a one dimensional model.

In a spinor Bose-Einstein gas, the non-zero hyperfine spin of the gas becomes an accessible degree of freedom. At low temperature, such a gas shows both magnetic and superfluid order, and undergoes both density and spin dynamics. These lecture notes present a general overview of the properties of spinor Bose-Einstein gases. The notes are divided in five sections. In the first, we summarize basic properties of multi-component quantum fluids, focusing on the specific case of sp...

The paper investigates the coexistence and interplay of spin and mass superfluidity in a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. Superfluidity is possible only in the presence of uniaxial anisotropy (linear and quadratic Zeeman effect). This follows from the topology of the order-parameter space (vacuum manifold). According to the Landau criterion, the critical phase gradients, both for mass and spin supercurrents, vanish at the phase transition from the easy-plane to ...

The extensive control of spin makes spintronics a promising candidate for future scalable quantum devices. For the generation of spin-superfluid systems, a detailed understanding of the build-up of coherence and relaxation is necessary. However, to determine the relevant parameters for robust coherence properties and faithfully witnessing thermalization, the direct access to space- and time-resolved spin observables is needed. Here, we study the thermalization of an easy-plan...

Finite temperature hydrodynamic model is derived for the spin-1 ultracold bosons by the many-particle quantum hydrodynamic method. It is presented as the two fluid model of the BEC and normal fluid. The linear and quadratic Zeeman effects are included. Scalar and spin-spin like short-range interactions are considered in the first order by the interaction radius. It is also represented as the set of two nonlinear Pauli equations. The spectrum of the bulk collective excitations...

Spin-orbit coupling is predicted to have dramatic effects on thermal properties of a two-component atomic Bose gas. We show that in three spatial dimensions it lowers the critical temperature of condensation and enhances thermal depletion of the condensate fraction. In two dimensions we show that spin-orbit coupling destroys superfluidity at any finite temperature, modifying dramatically the cerebrated Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario. We explain this by the increase ...

We present a self-consistent study of coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Finite spin-flipping coupling changes the first order demixing phase transition for Bose-Bose mixtures to a second order phase transition between an unpolarized and a polarized state. We analise the excitation spectrum and the structure factor along the transition for a homogeneous system. We discuss the main differences at the transition between a coherent coupled gas and a two-...

We investigate the cavity optomechanical properties of an antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein con- densate, where the role of the mechanical element is played by spin-wave excitations. We show how this system can be described by a single rotor that can be prepared deep in the quantum regime under realizable experimental conditions. This system provides a bottom-up realization of dispersive rotational optomechanics, and opens the door to the direct observation of quantum spin fluc...

We demonstrate, analytically and numerically, that the ferromagnetic phase of the spinor Bose-Einstein condenstate may experience modulational instability of the ground state leading to a fragmentation of the spin domains. Together with other nonlinear effects in the atomic optics of ultra-cold gases (such as coherent photoassociation and four-wave mixing) this effect provides one more analogy between coherent matter waves and light waves in nonlinear optics.

Using the Landau Fermi liquid theory we have discovered a new regime for the propagation of spin waves in a quasi-equilibrium spin systems. We have determined the dispersion relation for the transverse spin waves and found that one of the modes is gapless. The gapless mode corresponds to the precessional mode of the magnetization in a paramagnetic system in the absence of an external magnetic field. One of the other modes is gapped which is associated with the precession of t...
