We explore computationally the formation of tri-layer superlattices as an alternative approach for combining ferroelectricity with magnetism to form magnetoelectric multiferroics. We find that the contribution to the superlattice polarization from tri-layering is small compared to typical polarizations in conventionalferroelectrics, and the switchable ferroelectric component is negligible. In contrast, we show that epitaxial strain and ``negative pressure'' can yield large, s...

The exchange coupling underlies ferroic magnetic coupling and is thus the key element that governs statics and dynamics of magnetic systems. This fundamental interaction comes in two flavors - symmetric and antisymmetric coupling. While symmetric coupling leads to ferro- and antiferromagnetism, antisymmetric coupling has attracted significant interest owing to its major role in promoting topologically non-trivial spin textures that promise high-speed and energy-efficient devi...

The spin reorientation transition of an ultrathin film from perpendicular to in-plane magnetization is driven by a competition between dipole and anisotropy energies. \textit{In situ} measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of Fe/2 ML Ni/W(110) films as a function of Fe coverage, made as the films are deposited at constant temperature, show two clear peaks; one at the long-range and one at the local realization of the transition. In the long-range realization, the suscept...

In an antiferromagnet (AF) with uniaxial anisotropy, spin-up and spin-down magnons coexist and form an intrinsic degree of freedom resembling electrons. When polarized by an adjacent ferromagnet (F), a magnonic pure spin current can be thermally generated in an AF. We explore thermal magnon transport in an insulating F/AF/F trilayer where propagating magnons inside the AF spacer can transfer angular momenta between the two Fs. We find that a sufficiently large temperature gra...

Establishing the relation between the ubiquitous antiferromagnetism in the non-superconducting parent compounds of unconventional superconductors and their superconducting phase is believed to be important for the understanding of the complex physics in these materials. Going from the bulk systems to thin films strongly affects the phase diagram of unconventional superconductors. For Fe$_{1+y}$Te, the parent compound of the Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ superconductors, bulk sen...

Here we present microscopic evidence of the persistence of uniaxial A-type antiferromagnetic order to the surface layers of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ single crystals using magnetic force microscopy. Our results reveal termination-dependent magnetic contrast across both surface step edges and domain walls, which can be screened by thin layers of soft magnetism. The robust surface A-type order is further corroborated by the observation of termination-dependent surface spin-flop transition...

The magnetic orientations and switching fields of a CoCrPt-Ru-CoCrPt synthetic ferrimagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been studied in the temperature range from 2 K to 300 K. It was found that two sets of magnetic transitions occur in the CoCrPt-Ru-CoCrPt ferrimagnet across this temperature range. The first set exhibits three magnetic transitions in the 50 K - 370 K range, whereas the second involves only two transitions in the 2 K and 50 K range. The observe...

Spin textures such as magnetic domain walls and skyrmions have the potential to revolutionize electronic devices by encoding information bits. Although recent advancements in ferromagnetic films have led to promising device prototypes, their widespread implementation has been hindered by the material-related drawbacks. Antiferromagnetic spin textures, however, offer a solution to many of these limitations, paving the way for faster, smaller, more energy-efficient, and more ro...

It was experimentally observed that both magnetic anisotropy and spin-orbit interaction strength change when the magnetization of the nanomagnet is reversed. This indicates a variation in spin-orbit interaction strength depending on whether the magnetic field penetrates the interface from a ferromagnetic to a non-magnetic metal or vice versa. Systematic measurements of over 100 nanomagnets revealed a consistent, yet unexpected, pattern between variations in magnetic anisotrop...

We use a combination of density functional theory and Monte Carlo calculations to calculate the surface magnetization in magnetoelectric $\mathrm{Cr_2O_3}$ at finite temperatures. Such antiferromagnets, lacking both inversion and time-reversal symmetries, are required by symmetry to posses an uncompensated magnetization density on particular surface terminations. Here, we first show that the uppermost layer of magnetic moments on the $(001)$ surface remain paramagnetic at the...
