Thin superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ films are patterned with a vortex-pin lattice consisting of columnar defect regions (CDs) with 180 nm diameter and 300 nm spacing. The critical current density flowing across low angle grain boundaries in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ thin films has been studied magnetometrically. Flux pinning is still the main limiting factor for the critical current of the high-temperature superconductors in high fields. In this paper we model the field dependence of the critical current in thin films with columnar defects aligned with the field. The characteristic shape of the critical current of the BaZrO$_3$ doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ thin films is reproduced and explained. We measured the current induced loss of vortex correlation in YBCO crystals using the pseudo DC flux transformer geometry. We find that the current $I_{cut}$ at which the top and bottom voltage differ is a linear function of temperature independent of pinning. A study has been perfomed on the superconducting critical current density J_{c} flowing across low angle grain boundaries in epitaxial thin films of YBa{2}Cu{3}O{7-d} (YBCO). We report on the in-plane magnetic field (H) dependence of the critical current density (Jc) in meandered and planar single grain boundaries (GBs) isolated in YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) coated conductors. The Jc(H)properties of the planar GB are consistent with those previously seen in single GBs of YBCO films grown on SrTiO3 bi-crystals. Mechanisms of vortex dynamics and pinning and self-field effects which could account for the thickness dependence of the critical current density J_c of superconducting films are addressed. We have grown and characterized 30 nm thick YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) films, deposited by pulsed laser deposition on both MgO (110) and SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates, which induce opposite strain to the superconducting layer.
