Thin superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ films are patterned with a vortex-pin lattice consisting of columnar defect regions (CDs) with 180 nm diameter and 300 nm spacing. They are fabricated by irradiation with 75 keV He$^+$ ions through a stencil mask. Peaks of the critical current reveal the commensurate trapping of vortices in domains near the edges of the sample. Upon ramping an external magnetic field, the positions of the critical current peaks are shifted ...

The critical current density flowing across low angle grain boundaries in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ thin films has been studied magnetometrically. Films (200 nm thickness) were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ bicrystal substrates containing a single [001] tilt boundary, with angles of 2, 3, 5, and 7 degrees, and the films were patterned into rings. Their magnetic moments were measured in applied magnetic fields up to 30 kOe at temperatures of 5 - 95 K; current densities of rings wit...

Flux pinning is still the main limiting factor for the critical current of the high-temperature superconductors in high fields. In this paper we model the field dependence of the critical current in thin films with columnar defects aligned with the field. The characteristic shape of the critical current of the BaZrO$_3$ doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ thin films is reproduced and explained. The model is based on solving the Ginzburg-Landau equations with columnar defects present...

We measured the current induced loss of vortex correlation in YBCO crystals using the pseudo DC flux transformer geometry. We find that the current $I_{cut}$ at which the top and bottom voltage differ is a linear function of temperature independent of pinning. Although the vortex correlation length at $I_{cut}$ coincides with the sample thickness, the experimental data show that $I_{cut}$ is sample thickness independent. The observed behavior with temperature, magnetic field ...

A study has been perfomed on the superconducting critical current density J_{c} flowing across low angle grain boundaries in epitaxial thin films of YBa{2}Cu{3}O{7-d} (YBCO). The materials studied were dual grain boundary rings deposited on SrTiO{3} and containing 2, 3, 5 and 7 degree tilt boundaries. The current density in self-field was determined by magnetometric methods at temperatures from 5 K to T_c. We conclude that at the higher temperatures of coated conductor applic...

We report on the in-plane magnetic field (H) dependence of the critical current density (Jc) in meandered and planar single grain boundaries (GBs) isolated in YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) coated conductors. The Jc(H)properties of the planar GB are consistent with those previously seen in single GBs of YBCO films grown on SrTiO3 bi-crystals. In the straight boundary a characteristic flux channeling regime when H is oriented near the GB plane, associated with a reduced Jc, is seen. The m...

Mechanisms of vortex dynamics and pinning and self-field effects which could account for the thickness dependence of the critical current density J_c of superconducting films are addressed. It is shown that at low magnetic fields B, the 2D single-vortex pinning and thermal fluctuations yield J_c proportional to (1/sqrt{d})exp[-(d_m/d)^{1/2}], if the film thickness d is smaller than the pinning correlation length along B. The model describes the dependence of J_c on d observed...

We have previously shown for powders that Mo substitution into the CuO chains of YBa2Cu3O7 can create effective pinning centres which significantly increase the critical current density (j_c) in 7 T field by a factor of 4 and 10 at 50 and 60 K, respectively. The present work reports on the influence of the Mo substitution and high-pressure oxygen annealing on the pinning properties and critical currents of YBa_2Cu_{3-x}Mo_xO_{7-d} by comparing pure (x = 0, d > 0) and substitu...

We have grown and characterized 30 nm thick YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) films, deposited by pulsed laser deposition on both MgO (110) and SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates, which induce opposite strain to the superconducting layer. By carefully tuning the in-situ post-annealing oxygen pressure, we achieved, in a reproducible way, films at different oxygen doping, spanning from the slightly overdoped down to the strongly underdoped region of the phase diagram. The transport pr...
