Realistic selfconsistent calculations of unconventional superconductivity in a heavy-fermion material are reported. Our calculations for UPd$_2$Al$_3$ start from accurate energy band dispersions that are computed within the local spin-density functional theory and provide Fermi surfaces in agreement with experiment. Using physically motivated, realistic pairing potentials it is shown that the superconducting gap has two lines of nodes around the z-axis, thus exhibiting d-wave...

The field-orientation dependent thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ was measured down to very low temperatures and under magnetic fields throughout three distinct superconducting phases: A, B, and C phases. In the C phase, a striking twofold oscillation of the thermal conductivity within the basal plane is resolved reflecting the superconducting gap structure with a line of node along the a axis. Moreover, we find an abrupt vanishing of the oscill...

There is strong experimental evidence that the superconductor Sr2RuO4 has a chiral p-wave order parameter. This symmetry does not require that the associated gap has nodes, yet specific heat, ultrasound and thermal conductivity measurements indicate the presence of nodes in the superconducting gap structure of Sr2RuO4. Theoretical scenarios have been proposed to account for the existence of accidental nodes or deep accidental minima within a p-wave state. To elucidate the nod...

We have used thermal conduction and transverse sound attenuation to probe the anisotropy of the gap structure in two superconducting phases of UPt$_3$. For the low-temperature phase B, transverse sound has in the past provided strong evidence for a line node in the basal plane. Now, from the anisotropy of the thermal conductivity we further establish the presence of a node along the c-axis and provide information on its k-dependence. For the largely unexplored high-temperatur...

An efficient physically motivated computational approach to multiband superconductivity is introduced and applied to the study of the gap symmetry in a heavy-fermion, UPd$_2$Al$_3$. Using realistic pairing potentials and accurate energy bands that are computed within density functional theory, self-consistent calculations demonstrate that the only accessible superconducting gap with nodes exhibits d-wave symmetry in the $A_{1g}$ representation of the $D_{6h}$ point group. Our...

To clarify the superconducting gap structure of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr_2RuO_4, the in-plane thermal conductivity has been measured as a function of relative orientations of the thermal flow, the crystal axes, and a magnetic field rotating within the 2D RuO_2 planes. The in-plane variation of the thermal conductivity is incompatible with any model with line nodes vertical to the 2D planes and indicates the existence of horizontal nodes. These results place strong c...

We have analyzed heat capacity and thermal conductivity measurements of Sr2RuO4 in the normal and superconducting state and come to the conclusion that an order parameter with nodal lines on the Fermi surface is required to account for the observed low-temperature behavior. A gapped order parameter is inconsistent with the reported thermodynamic and transport data. Guided by a strongly peaked dynamical susceptibility along the diagonals of the Brillouin zone in neutron scatte...

Recently it was revealed that the whole Fermi surface is fully gapped for several families of underdoped cuprates. The existence of the finite energy gap along the $d$-wave nodal lines ("nodal gap") contrasts the common understanding of the $d$-wave pairing symmetry, which challenges the present theories for the high-$T_c$ superconductors. Here we propose that the incommensurate diagonal spin-density-wave order can account for the above experimental observation. The Fermi sur...

We discuss the nodal structure of odd-parity superconductors in the presence of non-symmorphic crystal symmetries, both with and without spin-orbit coupling, and with and without time reversal symmetry. We comment on the relation of our work to previous work in the literature, and also the implications for unconventional superconductors such as UPt$_3$.

One key feature of the multi-orbital superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is the presence of nodal or near-nodal quasiparticle excitations revealed in a wide variety of experiments. Typically, a nodal gap structure in a two-dimensional model would be inconsistent with the chiral or helical p-wave interpretations. However, we demonstrate that true gap nodes may emerge along certain high-symmetry directions on the quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surfaces, if the multi-orbital chiral or he...
