We study a strongly interacting quantum dot connected to a normal and to a superconducting lead. By means of the slave-boson technique we investigate the low temperature regime and discuss electrical transport through the dot. We find that the zero bias anomaly in the current-voltage characteristics which is associated to the occurance of the Kondo resonance in the quantum dot, is enhanced in the presence of superconductivity, due to resonant Andreev scattering.

We present a theory of the current-voltage characteristics in diffusive superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor junctions. By solving the time-dependent Usadel equations we are able to describe the phase-coherent transport for arbitrary length of the normal wire. We show how the interplay between proximity effect and multiple Andreev reflections gives rise to a rich subgap structure in the conductance and how it is revealed in the non-equilibrium distribution function.

We study effects of magnetic field on the energy spectrum in a superconducting quantum point contact. The supercurrent induced by the magnetic field leads to intermode transitions between the electron waves that pass and do not pass through the constriction. The latter experience normal reflections which couple the states with opposite momenta inside the quantum channel and create a minigap in the energy spectrum that depends on the magnetic field.

Quantitative description of charge transport across tunneling and break-junction devices with novel superconductors encounters some problems not present, or not as severe for traditional superconducting materials. In this work, we explain unexpected features in related transport characteristics as an effect of a degraded nano-scaled sheath at the superconductor surface. Model capturing main aspects of the ballistic charge transport across hybrid superconducting structures wit...

We have found experimentally that the noise of ballistic electron transport in a superconductor/semiconductor/superconductor junction is enhanced relative to the value given by the general relation, S_V=2eIR^2coth(eV/2kT), for two voltage regions in which this expression reduces to its thermal and shot noise limits. The noise enhancement is explained by the presence of large charge quanta, with effective charge q*=(1+2Delta/eV)e, that generate a noise spectrum S_V=2q*IR^2, as...

The superconducting proximity effect is probed experimentally in Josephson junctions fabricated with InAs nanowires contacted by Nb leads. Contact transparencies $t \sim 0.7$ are observed. The electronic phase coherence length at low temperatures exceeds the channel length. However, the elastic scattering length is a few times shorter than the channel length. Electrical measurements reveal two regimes of quantum transport: (i) the Josephson regime, characterized by a dissipat...

We investigate the conductance through and the spectrum of ballistic chaotic quantum dots attached to two s-wave superconductors, as a function of the phase difference $\phi$ between the two order parameters. A combination of analytical techniques -- random matrix theory, Nazarov's circuit theory and the trajectory-based semiclassical theory -- allows us to explore the quantum-to-classical crossover in detail. When the superconductors are not phase-biased, $\phi=0$, we recove...

We apply the scattering matrix approach to the triplet proximity effect in superconductor-half metal structures. We find that for junctions that do not mix different orbital modes, the zero bias Andreev conductance vanishes, while the zero bias Josephson current is nonzero. We illustrate this finding on a ballistic half-metal--superconductor (HS) and superconductor -- half-metal -- superconductor (SHS) junction with translation invariance along the interfaces, and on HS and S...

We study the interplay of Klein tunneling (= interband tunneling) between n-doped and p-doped regions in graphene and Andreev reflection (= electron-hole conversion) at a superconducting electrode. The tunneling conductance of an n-p-n junction initially increases upon lowering the temperature, while the coherence time of the electron-hole pairs is still less than their lifetime, but then drops back again when the coherence time exceeds the lifetime. This reentrance effect, k...

In this work, it is considered a nanostructure composed by a quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnets and a superconductor. The transport properties of this system are studied within a generalized mean-field approximation taking into account proximity effects and spin-flip correlations within the quantum dot. It is shown that the zero-bias transmittance for the co-tunneling between the ferromagnetic leads presents a dip whose height depends on the relative orientation of the m...
