We present a detailed magnetothermal study of Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$, a perovskite manganite in which an insulator-metal transition can be driven by magnetic field, but also by pressure, visible light, x-rays, or high currents. We find that the field-induced transition is associated with a large release of energy which accounts for its strong irreversibility. In the ferromagnetic metallic state, specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate a much smaller spi...

Structural, electrical and magnetic measurements of 115 single crystals of PrIn$_5$ are reported. It has a tetragonal structure and has slightly lower cell volume than its isomorphic counter part CeCoIn_5. The resistivity saturates for T\geq 10K. Analysis of the resistivity for 10K<T< 60K indicates a regular fermi liquid behavior. It does not exhibit superconductivity down to T\sim 1K. The magnetic susceptibility analysis yielded the moment to be 4.00\mu_B indicating that the...

PrCo$_2$Ga$_8$ is an orthorhombic quasi-skutterudite type compound which crystallizes in the CaCo$_2$Al$_8$ structure type, with space group $Pbam$ (No. 55). The Pr$^{3+}$ ion has a site symmetry of $C_s$ which predicts a crystal electric field (CEF) level splitting into 9 singlets for $J$ = 4. However, a phase transition at $T_m$ = 1.28~K is observed in electrical resistivity and specific heat results and is reported in this paper. The electrical resistivity shows an upturn ...

We use transport and neutron-scattering measurements to show that a magnetic-field-induced transition from noncollinear to collinear spin arrangement in adjacent CuO_{2} planes of lightly electron-doped Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.01) crystals affects significantly both the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity. In the high-field collinear state, the magnetoresistance (MR) does not saturate, but exhibits an intriguing four-fold-symmetric angular dependence, oscillati...

We report measurements and analysis of magnetization, resistivity and thermopower of polycrystalline samples of the perovskite-type Co/Rh oxide La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$Co$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_{3-\delta}$. This system constitutes a solid solution for a full range of $x$,in which the crystal structure changes from rhombohedral to orthorhombic symmetry with increasing Rh content $x$. The magnetization data reveal that the magnetic ground state immediately changes upon Rh substitution fro...

Electronic structure, electrical transport, dc and ac magnetization properties of the hole substituted (Sr2+) partially B-site disordered double perovskite Pr2-xSrxCoMnO6 system have been investigated. Electronic structure was probed by employing X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The study suggested the presence of mixed valence states of the B-site ions (Co2+/Co3+ and Mn3+/Mn4+) with significant enhancement of the average oxidation states due to hole dopin...

We have investigated the effect of pressure on the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties on a single crystal of conducting, ferromagnet (T$_{C}$=157K) La$_{0.82}$Sr$_{0.18}$CoO$_{3}$ located near the boundary of the metal-insulator transition. Contrary to the results reported on related systems, we find a transition from the conducting state to an insulating state and a decrease of T$_{C}$ with increasing pressure while the lattice structure remains unchanged. We sh...

We present measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and of the thermal expansion of a LaCoO$_3$ single crystal. Both quantities show a strongly anomalous temperature dependence. Our data are consistently described in terms of a spin-state transition of the Co$^{3+}$ ions with increasing temperature from a low-spin ground state to an intermediate-spin state without (100K - 500K) and with (>500K) orbital degeneracy. We attribute the lack of orbital degeneracy up to 500K to (...

We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Co-doped Pr0.8Ca0.2MnO3 thin films using various spectroscopic techniques. X-ray absorption and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that the substituted Co ions are in the divalent state, resulting in hole doping on the Mn atoms. Studies of element-selective magnetic properties by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism found a large orbital magnetic moment for the Co ions. These spectroscopic studies reveal ...

The complex nature of the magnetic ground state in La$_{1-x}$A$_{x}$CoO$_{3}$ (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) has been investigated via neutron scattering. It was previously observed that ferromagnetic (FM) as well as antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations can coexist prior to the insulator-metal transition (IMT). We focused on a unique region in the Ba phase diagram, from x = 0.17 - 0.22, in which a commensurate AFM phase appears first with a propagation vector, k = (0, -0.5, 0.5), and the C...
