We study quasiparticle tunneling between the edges of a non-Abelian topological state. The simplest examples are a p+ip superconductor and the Moore-Read Pfaffian non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state; the latter state may have been observed at Landau-level filling fraction nu=5/2. Formulating the problem is conceptually and technically non-trivial: edge quasiparticle correlation functions are elements of a vector space, and transform into each other as the quasiparticle ...

Some models describing unconventional fractional quantum Hall states predict quasiparticles that obey nonabelian quantum statistics. The most prominent example is the Moore-Read model for the $\nu=5/2$ state, in which the ground state is a superconductor of composite fermions, and the charged excitations are vortices in that superconductor. In this paper we develop a physical picture of the nonabelian statistics of these vortices. Considering first the positions of the vortic...

The enigmatic even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level filling factor $\nu=5/2$ is arguably the most promising candidate for harboring Majorana quasi-particles with non-Abelian statistics and thus of potential use for topological quantum computing. The theoretical description of the $\nu=5/2$ state is generally believed to involve a topological p-wave pairing of fully spin-polarized composite fermions through their condensation into a non-Abelian Moore-R...

We further develop an approach to identify the braiding statistics associated to a given fractional quantum Hall state through adiabatic transport of quasiparticles. This approach is based on the notion of adiabatic continuity between quantum Hall states on the torus and simple product states---or "patterns"---in the thin torus limit, together with a suitable coherent state Ansatz for localized quasiholes that respects the modular invariance of the torus. We give a refined an...

The Pfaffian state is an attractive candidate for the observed quantized Hall plateau at Landau level filling fraction $\nu=5/2$. This is particularly intriguing because this state has unusual topological properties, including quasiparticle excitations with non-Abelian braiding statistics. In order to determine the nature of the $\nu=5/2$ state, one must measure the quasiparticle braiding statistics. Here, we propose an experiment which can simultaneously determine the braidi...

We investigate the nature of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling factor $\nu=13/5$, and its particle-hole conjugate state at $12/5$, with the Coulomb interaction, and address the issue of possible competing states. Based on a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation in spherical geometry, we present evidence that the physics of the Coulomb ground state (GS) at $\nu=13/5$ and $12/5$ is captured by the $k=3$ parafermion Read-Rezayi RR s...

The Moore-Read state, one of the leading candidates for describing the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $\nu{=}5/2$, is a paradigmatic $p$-wave superconductor with non-Abelian topological order. Among its many exotic properties, the state hosts two collective modes: a bosonic density wave and a neutral fermion mode that arises from an unpaired electron in the condensate. It has recently been proposed that the descriptions of the two modes can be unified by pos...

Non-Abelian phases are among the most highly-prized but elusive states of matter. We show that upstream noise measurements can identify the putative non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall plateaus at filling factors $\nu=\frac{12}{5}$ or in any half-filled Landau level. Interfacing these states with any readily-available Abelian state yields a binary outcome of upstream noise or no noise. Judicious choices of the Abelian states can produce a sequence of yes--no outcomes that fin...

Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil "finger print" evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emergin...

We study the non-Abelian statistics of quasiparticles in the Ising-type quantum Hall states which are likely candidates to explain the observed Hall conductivity plateaus in the second Landau level, most notably the one at filling fraction nu=5/2. We complete the program started in Nucl. Phys. B 506, 685 (1997) and show that the degenerate four-quasihole and six-quasihole wavefunctions of the Moore-Read Pfaffian state are orthogonal with equal constant norms in the basis give...
