The local density of states near dopants or impurities has recently been probed by scanning tunneling microscopy in both the parent and very lightly doped compounds of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. Our calculations based on a slave-rotor description account for all the following key features of the observed local density of states: i) positions and amplitudes of the in-gap spectral weights of a single impurity; ii) the spectral weight transfer from the upper Hubbard...

We investigate magnetic properties of lightly doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulators in the presence of non-magnetic impurities. Within the framework of the t-J model we calculate the doping dependence of the antiferromagnetic order parameter using the self-consistent diagrammatic techniques. We show that in the presence of non-magnetic impurities the antiferromagnetic order is more robust against hole doping in comparison with the impurity-free host, implying that magnetic ...

We present a theory for the lightly doped t-J model which is of possible relevance for the normal state of underdoped cuprates. Starting from an arbitrary dimer covering of the plane an exact representation of the t-J Hamiltonian in terms of bond bosons and fermions can be derived. Since all dimer coverings must give identical results for observable quantities we construct an approximate but translationally invariant Hamiltonian by averaging the bond particle Hamiltonian over...

We investigate the highly incoherent regime of hole-doped 2d Mott-Hubbard insulators at moderately small doping and temperatures T>=0.1J, where J is the exchange coupling. Within an extended dynamical mean-field theory of the t-J model and a generalized non-crossing approximation we calculate the single-particle spectral function, the dynamical susceptibility, and thermodynamic and transport quantities. Short-ranged antiferromagnetic fluctuations lead to strongly incoherent s...

We introduce the concept that there are two generic classes of Mott insulators in nature. They are distinguished by their responses to weak doping. Doped charges form cluster (i.e. distribute inhomogeneously) in type I Mott insulators while distribute homogeneously in type II Mott insulators. We present our opinion on the role inhomogeneity plays in the cuprates.

Hall and optical conductivity experiments on the cuprates indicate that the low-energy fermionic degrees of freedom in a doped Mott insulator posess a component that is dynamcially generated and hence determined by the temperature. We show explicitly how the spectrum in the lower Hubbard band should be partitioned to describe such dynamically generated charge degrees of freedom and corroborate this picture with the results from the exact low-energy theory of the Hubbard model...

We present variational Monte Carlo (VMC) results for the Gutzwiller-projected coexisting state including both antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and superconducting (SC) order in the two-dimensional t-t'-t"-J model. By further considering off-site spin correlation between electrons, in contrast to earlier VMC results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 027002 (2009)], we find the apparent competition between AFM order and SC order near the underdoped regime instead of coexistence. The local fe...

We study electronic structure of hole- and electron-doped Mott insulators in the two-dimensional Hubbard model to reach a unified picture for the normal state of cuprate high-Tc superconductors. By using a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory, we demonstrate that structure of coexisting zeros and poles of the single-particle Green's function holds the key to understand Mott physics in the underdoped region. We show evidence for the emergence of non-Fermi-liqui...

In this paper we explore the incommensurate spatial modulation of spin-spin correlations as the intrinsic property of the doped Mott insulator, described by the $t-J$ model. We show that such an incommensurability is a direct manifestation of the phase string effect introduced by doped holes in both one- and two-dimensional cases. The magnetic incommensurate peaks of dynamic spin susceptibility in momentum space are in agreement with the neutron-scattering measurement of cupr...

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed peculiar properties of mobile dopants in correlated anti-ferromagnets (AFMs). But describing them theoretically, even in simplified toy models, remains a challenge. Here we study ARPES spectra of a single mobile hole in the $t-J$ model. Recent progress in the microscopic description of mobile dopants allows us to use a geometric decoupling of spin and charge fluctuations at strong couplings, from which we conjectu...
