A new path-integral theory is developed to calculate the photoemission spectra (PES) of correlated many-electron systems. The application to the study on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and boron-doped diamond (BDD) is discussed in details. It is found that the isotopic shift in the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of Bi2212 is due to the off-diagonal quadratic electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, whereas the presence of electron-electron repulsion partially suppresses this effect. Fo...

The self-energy $\Sigma({\bf k},\omega)$, the fundamental function which describes the effects of many-body interactions on an electron in a solid, is usually difficult to obtain directly from experimental data. In this paper, we show that by making certain reasonable assumptions, the self-energy can be directly determined from angle resolved photoemission data. We demonstrate this method on data for the high temperature superconductor $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}$ (Bi2212) in the ...

The high-energy kink or the waterfall effect seen in the photoemission spectra of the cuprates is suggestive of the coupling of the quasiparticles to a high energy bosonic mode with implications for the mechanism of superconductivity. Recent experiments however indicate that this effect may be an artifact produced entirely by the matrix element effects, i.e. by the way the photoemitted electron couples to the incident photons in the emission process. In order to address this ...

The electronic structure of heavily overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The long-sought bilayer band splitting in this two-plane system is observed in both normal and superconducting states, which qualitatively agrees with the bilayer Hubbard model calculations. The maximum bilayer energy splitting is about 88 meV for the normal state feature, while it is only about 20 meV for the superconducting peak. Thi...

The Fermi surface of the Bi2212 system is systematically studied using a variety of photon energies. In addition to reconciling the conflicting reports on the Fermi surface of this important material, we identify almost perfectly nested Fermi surface segments parallel to the $(1,0)$ or $(0,1)$ direction. This general yet long overlooked feature of the Fermi surface is intriguingly similar to the Fermi surface of the $La_{1.48}Nd_{0.4}Sr_{0.12}CuO_4$ system.

The dynamics of excitations with different symmetry is investigated in the superconducting (SC) and normal state of the high-temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) using optical pump-probe (Pp) experiments with different light polarizations at different doping levels. The observation of distinct selection rules for SC excitations, present in A$_{{\rm 1g}}$ and B$_{{\rm 1g}}$ symmetries, and for the PG excitations, present in A$_{{\rm 1g}}...

Pb doping effect in the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10}$ compound (Bi2223) on the structural and electronic properties were investigated, using the Local Density (LDA) and Virtual Crystal (VCA) approximations within the framework of the Density Functional Theory (DFT), taking as reference the procedure implemented by H.Lin {\it et al.} in the Bi2212 compound [{\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 96} (2006) 097001]. Results show that, the incorporation of Pb-dopant in Bi2223 lead a rig...

By means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we report on the electronic structures of BiO and SrO planes of Bi2Sr2CuO6+{\delta} (Bi-2201) superconductor prepared by argon-ion bombardment and annealing. Depending on post annealing conditions, the BiO planes exhibit either pseudogap (PG) with sharp coherence peaks and an anomalously large gap of 49 meV or van Hove singularity (VHS) near the Fermi level, while the SrO is always characteristic of a PG-like feature....

We present a comprehensive theory on the spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) of materials with glide-mirror symmetry, focusing on the role of glide symmetry on the spin selection rule. In the glide-symmetric SARPES configuration, where the surface of a material, the incoming light and the outgoing photoelectrons are invariant under a glide reflection, the spin polarization of photoelectrons is determined by the glide eigenvalue of the initial state, w...

We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to characterize the dynamics of the energy gap in superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (Bi2212). Photoexcitation drives the system into a nonequilibrium pseudogap state: Near the Brillouin zone diagonal (inside the normal-state Fermi arc), the gap completely closes for a pump fluence beyond F = 15 {\mu}J/cm^2; toward the Brillouin zone face (outside the Fermi arc), it remains open to at least 24 {\mu}J/cm^2. This stron...
