We present a general approach for the numerical calculation of the effective dielectric tensor of metamaterials and show that our formalism can be used to study metamaterials beyond the long wavelength limit. We consider a system composed of high refractive index cylindric inclusions and show that our method reproduces the Mie resonant features and photonic band structure obtained from a multiple scattering approach, hence opening the possibility to study arbitrarily complex ...

We use a homogenization procedure for Maxwell's equations in order to obtain in the local limit the frequency ($\omega$) dependent macroscopic dielectric response $\epsilon^M(\omega)$ of metamaterials made of natural constituents with any geometrical shape repeated periodically with any structure. We illustrate the formalism calculating $\epsilon^M(\omega)$ for several structures. For dielectric rectangular inclusions within a conducting material we obtained a very anisotropi...

We investigate a class of multilayered metamaterials characterized by moderate-index inclusions and low average permittivity. Via first-principle calculations, we show that in such scenario first- and second-order spatial dispersion effects may exhibit a dramatic and non-resonant enhancement, and may become comparable to the local response. Their interplay gives access to a wealth of dispersion regimes encompassing additional extraordinary waves and topological phase transiti...

Recently it has been shown that due to losses the claims on observation of negative refraction using metamaterials are questionable. In this paper we discus an interesting case that is based in almost zero permeability at a given frequency: zero permeability materials. This represents a way out of the problem of left handed materials, and constitutes a material that acts a band pass filter with a very narrow band. The metamaterials claimed to present negative refraction are j...

In recent years, the concept of metamaterials has offered platforms for unconventional tailoring and manipulation of the light-matter interaction. Here, we explore the notion of "static optics", in which the electricity and magnetism are decoupled and their fields are statically distributed, while being temporally dynamic. This occurs when both the relative effective permittivity and permeability attain near-zero values at an operating frequency. We theoretically investigate ...

We suggest a principle for isolation of circularly polarized waves in magnetically active extreme-parameter metamaterials. Using theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we show that metamaterials with extreme parameters, such as epsilon-near-zero materials (ENZ), when merged with magneto-optical materials, become transparent for forward circularly polarized waves of a given handedness and opaque for backward propagating waves of the same handedness. We theoretically s...

A new type of metal-dielectric composites has been proposed that is characterised by a resonance-like behaviour of the effective permeability in the infrared and visible spectral ranges. This material can be referred to as optomagnetic medium. The analytical formalism developed is based on solving the scattering problem for considered inclusions with impedance boundary condition, which yields the current and charge distributions within the inclusions. The presence of the effe...

In this study, we illustrate the effective medium theories in the designs of three-dimensional composite metametails of both negative permittivity and permeability. The proposed metamaterials consist of coated spheres embedded in a dielectric host. Simple design rules and formulas following the effective medium models are numerically and analytically presented. We demonstrate that the revised Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory enables us to design three-dimensional compo...

We propose a class of optical transformation media, illusion media, which render the enclosed object invisible and generate one or more virtual objects as desired. We apply the proposed media to design a microwave device, which transforms an actual object into two virtual objects. Such an illusion device exhibits unusual electromagnetic behavior as verified by full-wave simulations. Different from the published illusion devices which are composed of left-handed materials with...

We theoretically investigate the transmission of electromagnetic radiation through a metal plate with a zero-$\epsilon$ metamaterial slit, where the permittivity tends towards zero over a given bandwidth. Our analytic results demonstrate that the transmission coefficient can be substantial for a broad range of slit geometries, including subwavelength widths that are many wavelengths long. This novel resonant effect has features quite unlike the Fabry-P\'{e}rot-like resonances...
