The topological classification of a series of frustration-induced spin-gap phases in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic--antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbour interaction reported in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 82, 064703 (2013) is confirmed using two kinds of entanglement spectra defined by different divisions of the whole chain. For the numerical calculation, the iDMRG method is used. The results are consistent with the valence bond solid picture propose...

The low-energy structure and the thermodynamic properties of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains of alternating spins $S$ and $s$ are investigated by the use of numerical tools as well as the spin-wave theory. The elementary excitations are calculated through an efficient quantum Monte Carlo technique featuring imaginary-time correlation functions and are characterized in terms of interacting spin waves. The thermal behavior is analyzed with particular emphasis on its ferromagnet...

Static and dynamic structure factors of Heisenberg ferrimagnetic spin chains are numerically investigated. There exist two distinct branches of elementary excitations, which exhibit ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic aspects. The ferromagnetic feature is smeared out with the increase of temperature, whereas the antiferromagnetic one persists up to higher temperatures. The scattering intensity is remarkably large at lower boundaries of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ...

We study thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg ferrimagnet with antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled two kinds of spins 1 and 1/2. The specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility are calculated employing a modified spin-wave theory as well as a quantum Monte Carlo method. The specific heat is in proportion to $T^{1/2}$ at low enough temperatures but shows a Schottky-like peak at mid temperatures. The susceptibility diverges as $T^{-2}$. We reveal that...

The dynamical structure factor $S(Q,\omega)$ of the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with length 20 at zero temperature is calculated. The lowest energy states have the delta-function peak at the region $\pi\ge \vert Q\vert >0.3\pi$. At $\vert Q\vert<0.3\pi$ the lowest energy states are the lower-edge of the continuum of the scattering state, the strength of which decreases for large systems. This gives a reasonable explanation for the experimental fact that no clear ...

We study the low-energy properties of a sawtooth chain with spin-1's at the bases of the triangles and spin-1/2's at the vertices of the triangles. The spins have Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest neighbors, with a coupling J_2 between a spin-1 and a spin-1/2, and a coupling J_1 = 1 between two spin-1's. Analysis of the exact diagonalization data for periodic chains containing up to N=12 unit cells shows that the ground state is a singlet for exchange ...

In this paper we present results for the ground state and low-lying excitations of the $S=1/2$ alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. Our more conventional techniques include perturbation theory about the dimer limit and numerical diagonalization of systems of up to 28 spins. A novel application of multiple precision numerical diagonalization allows us to determine analytical perturbation series to high order; the results found using this approach include ninth-order...

Low-lying excited states as well as the ground state of the spin-1 antiferro- magnetic Heisenberg chain with a spin-1/2 impurity are investigated by means of a variational method and a method of numerical diagonalization. It is shown that 1) the impurity spin brings about massive modes in the Haldane gap, 2) when the the impurity-host coupling is sufficiently weak, the phenomenological Hamiltonian used by Hagiwara {\it et al.} in the analysis of ESR experimental results for N...

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of Heisenberg ferrimagnetic mixed-spin chains both numerically and analytically with particular emphasis on the combination of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic features. Employing a new density-matrix renormalization-group technique as well as a quantum Monte Carlo method, we reveal the overall thermal behavior: At very low temperatures, the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility times temperature behave like $T^{1/2}$ and...

The low energy properties of the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are studied by means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and real space renormalization group (RSRG) method for finite chains. The results of the two methods are consistent with each other. The deviation of the gap distribution from that of the random singlet phase and the formation of the large-spin state is observed even for relatively small...
