The ground state for the half-filled $t-t'$ Hubbard model is treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation and the slave boson approach including correlations. The criterium for the metal-insulator transition in the Slater scenario is formulated using an analytical free-energy expansion in the next-nearest-neighbor transfer integral $t'$ and in direct antiferromagnetic gap $\Delta$. The correlation effects are generally demonstrated to favor the first-order transition. For a ...

We present the influence of spin correlation on the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in two-orbital Hubbard models by the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach. In the asymmetric half-filling situation, the two orbits simultaneously transit from conducting to insulating states with the increase of Coulomb correlation, accompanied by a paramagnetic (PM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. The orbital selective Mott transition found in the PM condition is completely suppres...

We argue that the binding between doubly occupied (doublon) and empty (holon) sites governs the incoherent excitations and plays a key role in the Mott transition in strongly correlated Mott-Hubbard systems. We construct a new saddle point solution with doublon-holon binding in the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson functional integral formulation of the Hubbard model. On the half-filled honeycomb lattice and square lattice, the ground state is found to exhibit a continuous tran...

Ground state magnetic phase diagrams of the square and simple cubic lattices are investigated for the narrow band Hubbard model within the slave-boson approach by Kotliar and Ruckenstein. The transitions between saturated (half-metallic) and non-saturated ferromagnetic phases as well as similar transition in antiferromagnetic (AFM) state are considered in the three-dimensional case. Two types of saturated antiferromagnetic state with different concentration dependences of sub...

We study the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model for small to moderate interaction strengths $1\leq U/t\leq 4$ by means of the ladder dual fermion approach. The non-local correlations beyond dynamical mean-field theory lower the potential energy, lead to a maximum in the uniform susceptibility and induce a pseudogap in the density of states. While the self-energy exhibits precursors of a possible insulating phase linked to the appearance of long-range fluctuations, t...

Mott transition plays a key role in strongly correlated physics but its nature is not yet fully understood. Motivated by recent development of Schwinger boson approach for the Kondo lattice, we propose in this work a novel slave fermion algorithm to study the Mott transition. Upon local approximation, our method yields a phase diagram with a zero-temperature continuous (Mott) metal-insulator transition at finite Coulomb interaction $U$ for the half-filled one-band Hubbard mod...

A slave-boson functional-integral method has been developed for the Hubbard model with arbitrary, orbital degeneracy $D$. Its saddle-point mean-field theory is equivalent to the Gutzwiller approximation, as in the case of single-band Hubbard model. Our theory is applied to the doubly degenerate ($D = 2$) model, and numerical calculations have been performed for this model in the paramagnetic states. The effect of the exchange interaction on the metal-insulator (MI) transition...

A slave boson representation for the degenerate Hubbard model is introduced. The location of the metal to insulator transition that occurs at commensurate densities is shown to depend weakly on the band degeneracy M. The relative weights of the Hubbard sub-bands depend strongly on M, as well as the magnetic properties. It is also shown that a sizable Hund's rule coupling is required in order to have a ferromagnetic instability appearing. The metal to insulator transition driv...

We study the quantum phase transition from an insulator to a metal realized at t'=t'_c > 0.5t in the ground state of the half-filled Hubbard chain with both nearest-neighbor (t) and next-nearest-neighbor (t') hopping. The study is carried out using the bosonization approach and density matrix renormalization group calculations. An effective low-energy Hamiltonian that describes the insulator-metal transition is derived. We find that the gross features of the phase diagram are...

The slave-particle representation is a promising method to treat the properties of exotic strongly correlated systems. We develop a unified approach to describe both the paramagnetic state with possible spin-liquid features and states with strong long-range or short-range magnetic order. Combining the Kotliar-Ruckenstein representation and fractionalized spin-liquid deconfinement picture, the Mott transition and Hubbard subbands are considered. The spectrum in the insulating ...
