On the basis of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Hubbard model which cover the doping range from the under- to the over-doped regime, we find that the single-particle spectral weight $A (\vec k,\omega)$ qualitatively reproduces both the momentum ($d_{x^2-y^2}$--symmetry) and doping dependence of the pseudogap as found in photoemission experiments. The drastic doping dependence of the spin response $\chi_{s} (\vec q,\omega)$ which is sharp in both $\vec q (\approx(\pi,\pi))$ and $\omega$ in the under-doped regime but broad and structureless otherwise, identifies remnants of the antiferromagnetic order as the driving mechanism behind the pseudogap and its evolution with doping.

We investigate the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperature using controlled diagrammatic Monte Carlo calculations allowing for the computation of spectral properties in the infinite-size limit and, crucially, with arbitrary momentum resolution. We show that three distinct regimes are found as a function of doping and interaction strength, corresponding to a weakly correlated metal with properties close to those of the non-interacting system, a correlated met...

We investigate the microscopic origin of the pseudogap in the weakly doped 2D Hubbard model using Quantum Monte Carlo within the dynamical cluster approximation. We compare our results with proposed scenarios for the pseudogap. All our numerical evidence is in favor of spin-charge separation as described in the resonating valence bond picture as the cause of the pseudogap behavior. Scenarios of "preformed pairs", the coupling of quasiparticles to antiferromagnetic spin-fluctu...

We compute unbiased spectral functions of the two-dimensional Hubbard model by extrapolating Green functions, obtained from determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations, to the thermodynamic and continuous time limits. Our results clearly resolve the pseudogap at weak to intermediate coupling, originating from a momentum selective opening of the charge gap. A characteristic pseudogap temperature T*, determined consistently from the spectra and from the momentum dependence of...

Using the dynamical cluster approximation and quantum monte carlo we calculate the single-particle spectra of the Hubbard model with next-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$. In the underdoped region, we find that the pseudogap along the zone diagonal in the electron doped systems is due to long range antiferromagnetic correlations. The physics in the proximity of $(0,\pi)$ is dramatically influenced by $t'$ and determined by the short range correlations. The effect of $t'$ on the ...

On the basis of Quantum-Monte-Carlo results the evolution of the spectral weight $A(\vec k, \omega)$ of the two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied from insulating to metallic behavior. As observed in recent photoemission experiments for cuprates, the electronic excitations display essentially doping-independent features: a quasiparticle-like dispersive narrow band of width of the order of the exchange interaction $J$ and a broad valence- and conduction-band background. The ...

We present spectral and optical properties of the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice using a generalization of dynamical mean-field theory to magnetic states in finite dimension. The self-energy includes the effect of spin fluctuations and screening of the Coulomb interaction due to particle-particle scattering. At half-filling the quasiparticles reduce the width of the Mott-Hubbard `gap' and have dispersions and spectral weights that agree remarkably well with...

We study the pseudogaps in the spectra of the half-filled 2D Hubbard model using both finite-size and dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) quantum Monte Carlo calculations. A charge pseudogap, accompanied by non-Fermi liquid behavior in the self energy, is shown to persist in the thermodynamic limit. The DCA (finite-size) method systematically underestimates (overestimates) the width of the pseudogap. A spin pseudogap is not seen at half-filling.

We present reliable many-body calculations for the t-t'-t''-U Hubbard model that explain in detail the results of recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments on electron-doped high-temperature superconductors. The origin of the pseudogap is traced to two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations whose calculated temperature dependent correlation length also agrees with recent neutron scattering measurements. We make specific predictions for photoemission, for neutro...

We have studied the pseudogap formation in the single-particle spectra of the half-filling two-dimensional Hubbard model. Using a Green's function with the one-loop self-energy correction of the spin and charge fluctuations, we have numerically calculated the self-energy, the spectral function, and the density of states in the weak-coupling regime at finite temperature. Pseudogap formations have been observed in both the density of states and the spectral function at the Ferm...

We present Quantum Monte Carlo results on the antiferromagnetic correlations and the one-electron excitations of the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model. These results are helpful in interpreting the NMR, neutron scattering and photoemission experiments on the layered cuprates.
