Condensed matter physicists have long sought a realistic two-dimensional (2D) magnetic system whose ground state is a {\it spin liquid}---a zero temperature state in which quantum fluctuations have melted away any form of magnetic order. The nearest-neighbor $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice has seemed an ideal candidate, but in recent years some approximate numerical approaches to it have yielded instead a valence bond crystal. We have used the density matrix re...

Ever since the experiments which founded the field of highly frustrated magnetism, the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet has been the archetypical setting for the study of fluctuation induced exotic ordering. To this day the nature of its classical low-temperature state has remained a mystery: the non-linear nature of the fluctuations around the exponentially numerous harmonically degenerate ground states has not permitted a controlled theory, while its complex energy landsca...

This review presents some theoretical advances in the field of quantum magnetism in two-dimensional systems, and quantum spin liquids in particular. It is to be published as a chapter in the second edition of the book "Frustrated spin systems", edited by H. T. Diep (World-Scientific). The section (Sec. 7) devoted to the kagome antiferromagnet has been completely rewritten/updated, as well as the concluding section (Sec. 8). The other sections (Secs. 1-6) are unchanged from th...

In a recent paper [arXiv:1601.02165], Tao Li claimed that a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid, obtained using projected Gutzwiller fermionic wave functions, can be stabilized in the Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. We perform very accurate variational calculations and confirm with unprecedented accuracy the fact, that the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid is a local energy minimum that goes away with system size, thus reaffirming the scenario of a gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin ...

Motivated by recent experiments on the Heisenberg S=1/2 quantum spin liquid candidate material kapellasite, we classify all possible chiral (time-reversal symmetry breaking) spin liquids with fermionic spinons on the kagome lattice. We obtain the phase diagram for the physically relevant extended Heisenberg model, comparing the energies of a wide range of microscopic variational wave functions. We propose that, at low temperature, kapellasite exhibits a gapless chiral spin li...

We study the ground state and low-lying excitations of the S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at magnetization one third of the saturation. An exponential number of non-magnetic states is found below a magnetic gap. The non-magnetic excitations also have a gap above the ground state, but it is much smaller than the magnetic gap. This ground state corresponds to an ordered pattern with resonances in one third of the hexagons. The spin-spin correlation function is ...

The ground state of the $S=1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is now recognized as a spin liquid, but its precise nature remains unsettled, even if more and more clues point towards a gapless spin liquid. We use high temperature series expansions (HTSE) to extrapolate the specific heat $c_V(T)$ and the magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$ over the full temperature range, using an improved entropy method with a self-determination of the ground state energy per site $e_0$. Opt...

We present a detailed study of the low-energy excitations of two existing finite-size realizations of the planar kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the sphere, the cuboctahedron and the icosidodecahedron. After highlighting a number of special spectral features (such as the presence of low-lying singlets below the first triplet and the existence of localized magnons) we focus on two major issues. The first concerns the nature of the excitations above the plateau phase at 1/...

Quantum fluctuations from frustration can trigger quantum spin liquids (QSLs) at zero temperature. However, it is unclear how thermal fluctuations affect a QSL. We employ state-of-the-art tensor network-based methods to explore the ground state and thermodynamic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA). Its ground state is shown to be consistent with a gapless QSL by observing the absence of zero-magnetization plateau as well as the algebraic behavio...

Frustrated quantum magnetism has moved to the forefront of physics research, posing fundamental questions concerning quantum disordered states, entanglement, topology and the nature of the quantum wavefunction. The defining problem in the field is one of the simplest, the ground state of the nearest-neighbour $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, but has defied all theoretical and numerical methods employed to date. We apply the formalism of tens...
