This paper is devoted to study the accelerated expansion of the universe by exploring the Brans-Dicke parameter in different eras. For this purpose, we take FRW universe model with viscous fluid (without potential) and Bianchi type I universe model with barotropic fluid (with and without potential). We evaluate deceleration parameter as well as Brans-Dicke parameter to explore cosmic acceleration. It is concluded that accelerated expansion of the universe can also be achieved...

The present paper reports a study on the dimensionless parameter $\omega$ in Brans-Dicke theory. Based on a particular choice of scale factor $a$, we have investigated the signature flip of the deceleration parameter $q$ to see whether the transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion of the universe is achievable under this choice of scale factor. Restrictions on the parameters obtained for this choice of scale factor have been subsequently used for discussing the Bra...

Solutions to flat space Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies in Brans-Dicke theory with a cosmological constant are investigated. The matter is modelled as a $\gamma$-law perfect fluid. The field equations are reduced from fourth order to second order through a change of variables, and the resulting two-dimensional system is analyzed using dynamical system theory. When the Brans-Dicke coupling constant is positive $(\omega > 0)$, all initially expanding models approach expo...

We explore quintessence models of dark energy which exhibit non-minimal coupling between the dark matter and the dark energy components of the cosmic fluid. The kind of coupling chosen is inspired in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We impose a suitable dynamics of the expansion allowing to derive exact Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solutions once the coupling function is given as input. Self-interaction potentials of single and double exponential types emerge as result of our...

We show that the scalar-vacuum Brans-Dicke equations in 5D are equivalent to Brans-Dicke theory in 4D with a self interacting potential and an effective matter field. The cosmological implication, in the context of FRW models, is that the observed accelerated expansion of the universe comes naturally from the condition that the scalar field is not a ghost, i.e., $\omega > - 3/2$. We find an effective matter-dominated 4D universe which shows accelerated expansion if $- 3/2 < \...

This paper deals with a spatially homogeneous and totally anisotropic Bianchi type-V cosmological model within the framework of self interacting Brans Dicke theory of gravity in the background of anisotropic dark energy (DE) with variable equation of state (EoS) parameter and constant deceleration parameter. Constant deceleration parameter leads to two models of universe, i.e. power law model and exponential model. EoS parameter {\omega} and its existing range for the models ...

In this paper we study a quintessence scalar field in a potential exponentially decreasing with e-folding number, and show that the universe is currently undergoing an accelerated expansion and could probably remain accelerating indefinitely.

We propose a scenario that can explain the early-time inflation and the late-time dark energy within a unified framework. A scalar potential combining power-law and exponential type in a context of extended Jordan-Brans-Dicke gravity is critically important for this realization. A realistic scenario can be achieved in a two-field model in which one directional motion in field space realizes the slow-roll inflation. The inflaton ends up with oscillatory period and turns its di...

The present work deals with a dynamical systems study of quintessence potentials leading to the present accelerated expansion of the universe. The principal interest is to check for late time attractors which give an accelerated expansion for the universe. Two examples are worked out, namely the exponential and the power-law potentials.

There is some evidence that the Universe is presently undergoing accelerating expansion. This has restored some credit to the scenarios with a non-vanishing cosmological constant. From the point of view of a theory of fundamental interactions, one may argue that a dynamical component with negative pressure is easier to achieve. As an illustration, the quintessence scenario is described and its shortcomings are discussed in connection with the nagging ``cosmological constant p...
