In the context of gravitational collapse and black hole formation, we reconsider the problem to describe analytically the critical collapse of a massless and minimally coupled scalar field in $2+1$ gravity.

We present results of numerical simulations of the formation of black holes from the gravitational collapse of a massless, minimally-coupled scalar field in 2+1 dimensional, axially-symmetric, anti de-Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The geometry exterior to the event horizon approaches the BTZ solution, showing no evidence of scalar `hair'. To study the interior structure we implement a variant of black-hole excision, which we call singularity excision. We find that interior to the e...

Motivated by black hole solutions with matter fields outside their horizon, we study the effect of these matter fields in the motion of massless and massive particles. We consider as background a four-dimensional asymptotically AdS black hole with scalar hair. The geodesics are studied numerically and we discuss about the differences in the motion of particles between the four-dimensional asymptotically AdS black holes with scalar hair and their no-hair limit, that is, Schwar...

In this paper, we study the spherically symmetric traversable wormholes with a scalar field supported by a phantom field in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotic spacetime. Despite coupling the scalar matter field, these wormholes remain massless and symmetric for reflection of the radial coordinate $r \rightarrow -r$. The solution possesses a finite Noether charge $Q$, which varies as a function of frequency $\omega$ with changes in the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ and the ...

We investigate the behaviour of low-mass, planar domain walls in the so-called $\phi^4$ model of the scalar field on the Schwarzschild and Kerr backgrounds. We focus on a transit of a domain wall through a black hole and solve numerically the equations of motion for a range of parameters of the domain wall and the black hole. We observe a behavior resembling an occurrence of ringing modes. Perturbations of domain walls vanish during latter evolution, suggesting their stabilit...

We investigate a class of near-extremal solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory with electric charge and power law scaling, dual to charged IR phases of relativistic field theories at low temperature. These are exact solutions of theories with domain wall vacua; hence, we use nonconformal holography to relate the bulk and boundary theories. We numerically construct a global interpolating solution between the IR charged solutions and the UV domain wall vacua for arbitrary ...

We found Bogomol'nyi type of the first order differential equations in three dimensional Einstein gravity and the effective second order ones in new massive gravity when an interacting scalar field is minimally coupled. Using these equations in Einstein gravity, we obtain analytic solutions corresponding to extremally rotating hairy black holes. We also obtain perturbatively extremal black hole solutions in new massive gravity using these lower order differential equations. A...

We numerically investigate the stability of four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter ($AdS_4$) spacetime for a class of nonminimally coupled scalar field theories. In particular, we study how the coupling affects the formation of black holes and transfer of energy to different spatial/temporal scales. We conclude by detailing the well-known analogy between the nonminimally coupled scalar-field stress-energy tensor and that of a viscous relativistic fluid, and discuss th...

We present exact dynamical and inhomogeneous solutions in three-dimensional AdS gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field. They contain stealth configurations of the scalar field overflying the BTZ spacetime and also solutions with a non-vanishing energy-momentum tensor. The latter non-stealth class consists of the solution obtained by Xu and its analytic extension. It is shown that this proper extension represents: (i) an eternally shrinking dynamical black hole, (ii) ...

We present an exact collapsing solution to 2+1 gravity with a negative cosmological constant minimally coupled to a massless scalar field, which exhibits physical properties making it a candidate critical solution. We discuss its global causal structure and its symmetries in relation with those of the corresponding continously self-similar solution derived in the $\Lambda=0$ case. Linear perturbations on this background lead to approximate black hole solutions. The critical e...
