According to resummed perturbation theory, certain scalar theories have a global symmetry, which is restored in the vacuum but is broken at high temperatures. Recently, this phenomenon has been studied with 4d finite temperature lattice simulations, and it has been suggested that the non-perturbative dynamics thus incorporated would hinder the transition. We have carried out another lattice study, for a theory with very small coupling constants. We find perfect compatibility with next-to-leading order resummed perturbation theory, and demonstrate that ``inverse'' symmetry breaking can indeed take place at high temperatures.

We make a Monte Carlo study of the coupled two-scalar $\lambda\phi^2_1\phi^2_2$ model in four dimensions at finite temperature. We find no trace of Inverse Symmetry Breaking for values of the renormalized parameters for which perturbation theory predicts this phenomenon.

We study the finite temperature symmetry behaviour of O(N_1) \times O(N_2) scalar models on the lattice and we prove that at sufficiently high temperatures and in arbitrary dimensions their full symmetry is always restored or, equivalently, that the phenomenon of Symmetry Non Restoration which, according to lowest order perturbation theory, takes place in the continuum version of these models, does not occur on the lattice.

We present here a new MC study of ISB at finite temperature in a $Z_2\times Z_2$ $\lambda\phi^4$ model in four dimensions. The results of our simulations, even if not conclusive, are favourable to ISB. Detection of the effect required measuring some critical couplings with six-digits precision, a level of accuracy that could be achieved only by a careful use of FSS techniques. The gap equations for the Debye masses, resulting from the resummation of the ring diagrams, seem to...

We review how the phenomena of inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry nonrestoration) may arise in the context of relativistic as well as nonrelativistic multi-scalar field theories. We discuss how the consideration of thermal effects on the couplings produce different transition patterns for both theories. For the relativistic case, these effects allow the appearance of inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry nonrestoration) at arbitrarily large temperatures. On the other h...

We carry a Monte Carlo study of the coupled two-scalar $\lambda\phi^2_1 \phi^2_2$ model in three dimensions. We find no trace of Inverse Symmetry Breaking in the region of negative $\lambda$'s for which the one-loop effective potential predicts this phenomenon. Moreover, for $\lambda$'s negative enough, but still in the stability region for the potential, one of the transitions turns out to be of first order, both for zero and finite temperature.

For a large class of field theories there exist portions of parameter space for which the loop expansion predicts increased symmetry breaking at high temperature. Even though this behavior would clearly have far reaching implications for cosmology such theories have not been fully investigated in the literature. This is at least partially due to the counter intuitive nature of the result, which has led to speculations that it is merely an artifact of perturbation theory. To a...

We simulate a four dimensional self-interacting scalar field theory on the lattice at finite temperature. By varying temperature, the system undergoes a phase transition from broken phase to symmetric phase. Our data show that the zero-momentum field renormalization increases by approaching critical temperature. On the other hand, finite-momentum wave-function renormalization remains remarkably constant.

We discuss the question of inverse symmetry breaking at non-zero temperature using the exact renormalization group. We study a two-scalar theory and concentrate on the nature of the phase transition during which the symmetry is broken. We also examine the persistence of symmetry breaking at temperatures higher than the critical one.

The spontaneous symmetry breaking at zero temperature in the four-component four-dimensional scalar $\lambda \phi^4_4$ model (the O(4) model) is investigated on a lattice for different values of the coupling constant $\lambda$. A general method for dealing with such type dependence is developed. The Goldstone modes are integrated out in the spherical coordinates in the internal space of the scalar field by the saddle point method, and the initial functional integral of the mo...

We discuss the (non)-restoration of global and local symmetries at high temperature. First, we analyze a two-scalar model with $Z_2 \times Z_2$ symmetry using the exact renormalization group. We conclude that inverse symmetry breaking is possible in this kind of models within the perturbative regime. Regarding local symmetries, we consider the $SU(2) \otimes U(1)$ gauge symmetry and focus on the case of a strongly interacting scalar sector. Employing a model-independent chira...
