In the presence of penguin contributions, the indirect CP asymmetry in B0(t)->pi+ pi- measures some effective (``polluted'') angle 2alpha_{eff}. The angle 2theta=2alpha_{eff}-2alpha, parameterizes the size of the penguin pollution. A new, most stringent upper bound on |2theta|, requiring the measurement of of BR(B+ -> pi+ pi0) and an upper bound on B00 \equiv {1\over 2} [BR(B0 -> pi0 pi0) + BR(B0bar -> pi0 pi0)] is discussed. An interesting consequence of this bound, is a lower limit on B00. The summer update of the branching ratios and asymmetries in B->pi pi modes is expected to provide a more precise picture of the size of penguin pollution.

In the presence of penguin contributions, the indirect CP asymmetry in B0(t) -> pi+ pi- measures sin(2\alpha + 2\theta), where 2\theta parametrizes the size of the penguin ``pollution.'' We derive a new upper bound on |2\theta|, requiring the measurement of of BR(B+ -> pi+ pi0) and an upper bound on B00 \equiv {1\over 2} [BR(B0 -> pi0 pi0) + BR(B0bar -> pi0 pi0)]. The new bound is stronger than those previously discussed in the literature. We also present a lower bound on B00...

In the presence of penguin contributions, the indirect CP asymmetry in B^0(t) --> pi^+ pi^- measures sin 2alpha_{eff}, where alpha_{eff} deviates from the true value of the CKM phase alpha by an amount theta, i.e. alpha_{eff} = alpha + theta. Using the measured value of direct CP asymmetry in B^0(t) --> pi^+ pi^-, we derive new bound on |2 theta|.

A clean determination of the angle $\alpha$ of the unitary triangle from $B\to \pi\pi$ decays requires an isospin analysis. If the $B \to \pi^0\pi^0$ and $\bar B \to \pi^0\pi^0$ decay rates are small it may be hard to carry out this analysis. Here we show that an upper bound on the error on $\sin 2\alpha$ due to penguin diagram effects can be obtained using only the measured rate $\BR(B^\pm \to \pi^\pm \pi^0)$ and an upper bound on the combined rate $\BR(B \to \pi^0 \pi^0) + ...

We report on recent progress in studying two aspects of $B$ physics, in which penguin amplitudes play an important role: (1) Bounds on penguin pollution in $B^0(t) \to \pi^+\pi^-$ constraining CKM parameters, and a lower bound on $B^0 \to \pi^0\pi^0$ improving precision in $\sin 2\alpha$. (2) A suggestion for measuring the photon polarization in electroweak penguin decay, $B \to K_1(1400)\gamma$, providing a precision test of the Standard Model and a probe for new physics.

Penguin contributions, being not negligible in general, can hide the information on the CKM angle alpha coming from the measurement of the time-dependent B0(t) -> pi+pi- CP-asymmetry. Nevertheless, we show that this information can be summarized in a set of simple equations, expressing alpha as a multi-valued function of a single theoretically unknown parameter, which conveniently can be chosen as a well-defined ratio of penguin to tree amplitudes. Using these exact analytic ...

The extraction of the CKM angle $\alpha$ from the asymmetry in $B^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-$ vs ${\bar B^0} \to \pi^+\pi^-$ suffers from a currently unknown penguin contribution. Experimentally, one can determine the magnitude and phase of the CP asymmetry from a time-dependent analysis of tagged events, and the average rate for $B^0$ and $\bar{B}^0$ decays to $\pi^+\pi^-$ from untagged events. These measurements, together with the magnitudes and relative phase of the tree and penguin...

In the absence of the QCD penguin contributions a measurement of the time-dependent asymmetry in the decay $B^0(t)\to \pi^+\pi^-$ gives directly the weak angle $\alpha$. Several bounds have been proposed in the literature on the magnitude of the penguin effects on this determination, the prototype of which is the isospin bound of Grossman and Quinn. It is pointed out that large strong final state interactions could cause these bounds to overestimate the real penguin effect. A...

Penguin effects in the CP asymmetries of $B^0_d\rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ , $\bd\rightarrow\rho^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ and $\bd\rightarrow a^{\pm}_1 \pi^{\mp}$ are studied as function of the CKM unitarity triangle $\alpha$. Despite a fairly small penguin amplitude, it leads to quite sizable uncertainties in the determination of $\sin(2\alpha)$ from all but very large asymmetries. This effect is maximal for vanishing final state interaction phases, for which it can cause, for instance, ...

The influence of strong and electroweak penguin amplitudes in $B/ \bar B \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ is investigated in connection with the determination of the unitarity triangle angle $\alpha$ of the CKM matrix. A relation between the observable asymmetry, the angle $\alpha$, and the penguin amplitude is established. A model calculation of the penguin amplitude shows that the CP asymmetry in $B^{0}\rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays is only mildly influenced by the penguin ampli...

The decay $B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0$, dominated by a $b \to s$ penguin amplitude, holds the potential for exhibiting new physics in this amplitude. In the pure QCD penguin limit one expects $\ckp = 0$ and $\skp = \sin 2 \beta$ for the coefficients of $\cos \Delta m t$ and $\sin \Delta m t$ in the time-dependent CP asymmetry. Small non-penguin contributions lead to corrections to these expressions which are calculated in terms of isospin-related $B\to K\pi$ rates and asymmetries, usi...
