New bound on penguin pollution in B^0(t) --> pi^+ pi^-

In the presence of penguin contributions, the indirect CP asymmetry in B0(t) -> pi+ pi- measures sin(2\alpha + 2\theta), where 2\theta parametrizes the size of the penguin ``pollution.'' We derive a new upper bound on |2\theta|, requiring the measurement of of BR(B+ -> pi+ pi0) and an upper bound on B00 \equiv {1\over 2} [BR(B0 -> pi0 pi0) + BR(B0bar -> pi0 pi0)]. Penguin effects in the CP asymmetries of $B^0_d\rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ , $\bd\rightarrow\rho^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ and $\bd\rightarrow a^{\pm}_1 \pi^{\mp}$ are studied as function of the CKM unitarity triangle $\alpha$. A clean determination of the angle $\alpha$ of the unitary triangle from $B\to \pi\pi$ decays requires an isospin analysis. If the $B \to \pi^0\pi^0$ and $\bar B \to \pi^0\pi^0$ decay rates are small it may be hard to carry out this analysis. The extraction of the CKM angle $\alpha$ from the asymmetry in $B^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-$ vs ${\bar B^0} \to \pi^+\pi^-$ suffers from a currently unknown penguin contribution. Experimentally, one can determine the magnitude and phase of the CP asymmetry from a time-dependent analysis of tagged events, and the average rate for $B^0$ and $\bar{B}^0$ decays to $\pi^+\pi^-$ from untagged events. We report on recent progress in studying two aspects of $B$ physics, in which penguin amplitudes play an important role: (1) Bounds on penguin pollution in $B^0(t) \to \pi^+\pi^-$ constraining CKM parameters, and a lower bound on $B^0 \to \pi^0\pi^0$ improving precision in $\sin 2\alpha$. (2) A suggestion for measuring the photon polarization in electroweak penguin decay, $B \to K_1(1400)\gamma$, providing a precision test of the Standard Model and a probe for new physics.

Penguin contributions, being not negligible in general, can hide the information on the CKM angle alpha coming from the measurement of the time-dependent B0(t) -> pi+pi- CP-asymmetry. In the absence of the QCD penguin contributions a measurement of the time-dependent asymmetry in the decay $B^0(t)\to \pi^+\pi^-$ gives directly the weak angle $\alpha$. Performing a fit to the available experimental data, we quantify the effect of long-distance contributions from penguin contractions in B^0 to J/psi K^0 decays. We estimate the deviation of the measured S_CP term of the time-dependent CP asymmetry from sin(2 beta) induced by these contributions and by the penguin operators. We find Delta S = 0.000 +- 0.012 ([-0.025,0.024] @ 95% probability).

The influence of strong and electroweak penguin amplitudes in $B/ \bar B \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ is investigated in connection with the determination of the unitarity triangle angle $\alpha$ of the CKM matrix.
