Within the general framework of SU(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model beyond mean-field approximation, the S-wave $\pi - \pi$ scattering lengths $a_0^0$ and $a_0^2$ are calculated. The numerical results are in agreement with that analyzed from recent experiment $\pi N \to \pi \pi N$ data by using Chew-Low-Goebel technique, and the corresponding chiral condensate $<{\bar q}q>$ is around $-(250 {\rm MeV})^3$, which is close to the ones obtained from lattice and sum rules.

Almost 50 years after the discovery of gluons & quarks, we are only just beginning to understand how QCD builds the basic bricks for nuclei: neutrons, protons, and the pions that bind them. QCD is characterised by two emergent phenomena: confinement & dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). They are expressed with great force in the character of the pion. In turn, pion properties suggest that confinement & DCSB are closely connected. As both a Nambu-Goldstone boson and a q...

The connection between QCD, a nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type model and the Landau gauge gluon propagator is explored. This two point function is parameterized by a functional form which is compatible with Dyson-Schwinger and lattice QCD results. Demanding the nonlocal model to reproduce the experimental values for the pion mass, the pion decay constant, $\Gamma_{\pi \rightarrow \gamma\gamma}$ and the light quark condensate we conclude that low energy physics does not disti...

A representation of the two-loop contribution to the pion decay constant in $SU(3)$ chiral perturbation theory is presented. The result is analytic upto the contribution of the three (different) mass sunset integrals, for which an expansion in their external momentum has been taken. We also give an analytic expression for the two-loop contribution to the pion mass based on a renormalized representation and in terms of the physical eta mass. We find an expansion of $F_{\pi}$ a...

Various aspects of the Generalised Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model for QCD in four dimensions are reviewed. The properties of mesonic excitations are discussed in detail, with special attention paid to the chiral pion. The spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and the effective chiral symmetry restoration in the spectrum of highly excited mesons and baryons are described microscopically.

We use the simple instanton motivated NJL-type model to calculate the leading twist pion light cone wave function. The model consists in employing the momentum dependent quark mass in the quark loop entering the definition of the wave function. The result is analytical up to a solution of a certain algebraic equation. Various properties including the kT dependence of the pion wave function are discussed. The resulting kT integrated wave function is not asymptotic and is in ag...

Single pion production off nucleons is studied in the framework of relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory at tree level with the inclusion of the terms from the dimension two effective pion-nucleon Lagrangian. The five appearing low-energy constants are fixed from pion-nucleon scattering data. Despite the simplicity of the approach, most of the existing data for total and differential cross sections as well as for the angular correlation functions for incoming pion ki...

Parton distributions for the pion are studied in a chiral quark model characterized by a quark propagator for which a spectral representation is assumed. Electromagnetic and chiral symmetry constraints are imposed through the relevant Ward-Takahashi identities for flavoured vertex functions. Finiteness of the theory, requires the spectral function to be non-positive definite. Straightforward calculation yields the result that the pion structure function becomes one in the chi...

The behavior of charged and neutral pion masses in the presence of a static uniform magnetic field is studied in the framework of the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Analytical calculations are carried out employing the Ritus eigenfunction method. Numerical results are obtained for definite model parameters, comparing the predictions of the model with present lattice QCD (LQCD) results.

As increased statistics and new ensembles with light pions have become available within the CLS effort, we complete previous work by inspecting the chiral behaviour of the pion decay constant. We discuss the validity of Chiral Perturbation Theory ($\chi$PT) and examine the results concerning the pion decay constant and the ensuing scale setting, the pion mass squared in units of the quark mass, and the ratio of decay constants $f_K/f_\pi$; along the way, the relevant low-ener...
