Current phenomenological studies of jet observables at colliders are clearly limited by the theoretical uncertainties inherent in the next-to-leading order QCD description. We discuss the recent progress made towards the calculation of QCD corrections to jet observables at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD and highlight future perspectives and yet open issues.

Measurements of jet, prompt photon, high-pT hadron and heavy quark production in photon-induced processes provide tests of QCD and are sensitive to the photon parton densities. A review of the latest experimental results in photon-photon and photon-proton interactions is presented. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations for these measurements are discussed.

We have calculated inclusive two-jet cross sections in next-to-leading order QCD for direct photoproduction in low $Q^2$ $ep$ collisions at HERA. Infrared and collinear singularities in real and virtual contributions are cancelled with the phase space slicing method. We study the production of jets in hadronic collisions, by computing all contributions proportional to $\alpha_S^n\alpha^m$, with $n+m=2$ and $n+m=3$. We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of inclusive dijet photoproduction in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC and show that the results agree very well with various kinematic distributions measured by the ATLAS collaboration. The effect of including these data in nCTEQ or EPPS16 nuclear parton density functions (nPDFs) is then studied using the Bayesian reweighting technique.
