We analyze the phenomenology of the Higgs sector in a 5D model compactified on an $S_1/Z_2$ orbifold where the compactification scale $M_C$ is around the TeV scale. We show that the conventional MSSM Higgs boson mass bounds in 4D can be violated when we allow the gauge sector, Higgs and third family multiplets to live in the fifth extra dimension. Supersymmetry is broken at an orbifold fixed point which is spatially separated from the Yukawa brane where two chiral families ar...

In the context of a simple gauge-Higgs unification (GHU) scenario based on the gauge group SU(3)$\times$U(1)$^\prime$ in a 5-dimensional flat space-time, we investigate a possibility to reproduce the observed Higgs boson mass of around 125 GeV. We introduce bulk fermion multiplets with a bulk mass and a (half) periodic boundary condition. In our analysis, we adopt a low energy effective theoretical approach of the GHU scenario, where the running Higgs quartic coupling is requ...

We consider a 5-dimensional SU(5) model wherein the symmetry is broken to the 4-dimensional Standard Model by compactification of the 5th dimension on an S^1/(Z_2 \times Z^\prime_2) orbifold. We identify the members of all SU(5) representations upto 75 which have zero modes. We examine how these light scalars affect gauge coupling unification assuming a single intermediate scale and present several acceptable solutions. The 5-D compactification scale coincides with the unific...

A complete 5-dimensional SU(5) unified theory is constructed which, on compactification on the orbifold with two different Z_2's (Z_2 and Z_2'), yields the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The orbifold accomplishes SU(5) gauge symmetry breaking, doublet-triplet splitting, and a vanishing of proton decay from operators of dimension 5. Until 4d supersymmetry is broken, all proton decay from dimension 4 and dimension 5 operators is forced to vanish by an exact U(1)_R symme...

We investigate supersymmetric SU(5) grand-unified theories (GUTs) realized in 5 space-time dimensions and broken down to the MSSM by SU(5)-violating boundary conditions on a S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') orbifold with two 3-branes. The doublet-triplet splitting problem is entirely avoided by locating the MSSM Higgs doublets on the brane on which SU(5) is not a good symmetry. An extremely simple model is then described in which the MSSM matter is also located on this SU(5)-violating brane....

In the gauge-Higgs unification scenario the Higgs field is unified with gauge fields in higher dimensional gauge theory. The 4D Higgs field $H(x)$ corresponds to 4D fluctuations of the Aharonov-Bohm phase (Wilson line phase) $\theta_H$ in the extra-dimension. An $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification model in the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime with top and bottom quarks is presented. Gauge couplings of the top quark multiplet induce electroweak symmetry breaking by the ...

We study the dynamical symmetry breaking in the gauge-Higgs unification of the 5D ${\mathcal N}=1$ SUSY theory, compactified on an orbifold, $S^1/Z_2$. This theory identifies Wilson line degrees of freedoms as ``Higgs doublets''. We consider $SU(3)_c \times SU(3)_W$ and SU(6) models, in which the gauge symmetries are reduced to $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ and $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)$, respectively, through the orbifolding boundary conditio...

We investigate quartification models in five dimensions, with the fifth dimension forming an $S^1/Z_2\times Z_2'$ orbifold. The orbifold construction is combined with a boundary Higgs sector to break the quartified gauge group directly to a group $H\subset SU(3)^4$ which is operative at the electroweak scale. We consider $H=G_{SM}\otimes SU(2)_\ell$ and $H=G_{SM}$, where $G_{SM}$ is the standard model gauge group, and find that unification occurs only when the remnant leptoni...

To solve the doublet-triplet splitting problem in SU(5) grand unified theories, we propose a four dimensional orbifold grand unified theory by acting Z2 on the SU(5) gauge group. Without an adjoint Higgs, the orbifold procedure breaks the SU(5) gauge symmetry down to the standard model gauge group, and removes the triplet component of the fundamental SU(5) Higgs. In the supersymmetric framework, we show that the orbifold procedure removes two triplet superfields of the Higgs ...

We construct a Z_2 orbifold projection of SU(N) gauge theories formulated in five dimensions with a compact fifth dimension. We show through a non-perturbative argument that no boundary mass term for the Higgs field, identified with some of the fifth dimensional components of the gauge field, is generated, which would be quadratically divergent in the five-dimensional ultraviolet cutoff. This opens the possibility of studying these theories non-perturbatively in order to esta...
