This article provides some historical background and then reviews developments in string theory over the last twenty-five years or so. Both perturbative and non-perturbative approaches to string theory are surveyed and their impact on how we view quantum gravity is analysed.

Physicists in search of the foundation of the world: how tiny objects can create matter, energy and even space and time - and possibly countless other universes. -- This article is meant as an introduction into quantum geometry (loop quantum gravity) and string theory, written for the general audience. Partly, this article is also a conference report and review, based on the "Strings Meet Loops" conference at the Max-Planck-Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein...

These notes are based on lectures given at the Les Houches Summer School in 2011, which was centered on the general topic "Theoretical Physics to face the challenge of LHC". In these lectures I reviewed a number of topics in the field of String Phenomenology, focusing on orientifold/F-theory models yielding semi-realistic low-energy physics. The emphasis was on the extraction of the low-energy effective action and the possible test of specific models at LHC. These notes are a...

We combine I. background independent Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) quantization techniques, II. the mathematically rigorous framework of Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (AQFT) and III. the theory of integrable systems resulting in the invariant Pohlmeyer Charges in order to set up the general representation theory (superselection theory) for the closed bosonic quantum string on flat target space. While we do not solve the, expectedly, rich representation theory completely, we pre...

We give an elementary introduction to classical and quantum bosonic string theory.

Is large-$N$ QCD equivalent to a string theory? Maybe, maybe not. I review various attempts to answer the question.

We briefly review superstring theories, highlighting the important concepts, developments, and open problems of the subject.

String theory is the most promising candidate theory for a unified description of all fundamental forces exist in the nature. It provides a mathematical framework that combine quantum theory with Einstein's general theory of relativity. But due to the extremely small size of strings, nobody has been able to detect it directly in the laboratory till today. In this article, we have presented a general introduction to string theory.

We develop the idea for a new string field theory of ours that was proposed earlier in a very rudimentary form in a talk in the Symposium of Tohwa University [1]. The main point is to describe the system of strings in the Universe by means of the images of the derivatives of the right and left mover parts of the 26-position vector on the strings w.r.t. tau. The major progress since the Tohwa-talks [1] is to imagine a discretization of the variables on which right and left mov...
