We review the recent progress made in understanding instantons at finite temperature (calorons) with non-trivial holonomy, and their monopole constituents as relevant degrees of freedom for the confined phase.

We show the construction of the dual superconducting theory for the confinement mechanism from QCD in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge using the lattice QCD Monte Carlo simulation. We find that essence of infrared abelian dominance is naturally understood with the off-diagonal gluon mass $m_{\rm off} \simeq 1.2 {\rm GeV}$ induced by the MA gauge fixing. In the MA gauge, the off-diagonal gluon amplitude is forced to be small, and the off-diagonal gluon phase tends to be random...

We review the recent results in the physics of the magnetic monopoles in gluodynamics and a dual formulation of non-Abelian theories, relevant to the physics of the confinement. It occurs that the dual gluon is a U(1) gauge boson, despite of the fact that usual gluons are non-Abelian. The effective infrared Lagrangian for gluodynamics is suggested which leads to the Casimir scaling of the string tension for quarks in various representations. We also show that the results of t...

We study quark confinement physics using lattice QCD. In the maximally abelian (MA) gauge, the off-diagonal gluon amplitude is strongly suppressed, and then the off-diagonal gluon phase shows strong randomness, which leads to a large effective off-diagonal gluon mass, M_off=1.2GeV. Due to the large off-diagonal gluon mass in the MA gauge, low-energy QCD is abelianized like nonabelian Higgs theories. In the MA gauge, there appears a macroscopic network of the monopole world-li...

Recent progress in understanding the emergence of confinement and other nonperturbative effects in the strong interaction vacuum is reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on the role of different types of collective infrared gluonic degrees of freedom in this respect. After a survey of complementary approaches, models of the QCD vacuum based on center vortices, Abelian magnetic monopoles and topological charge lumps such as instantons, merons and calorons are examined. Both the...

We report on new analyses of the topological and chiral vacuum structure of four-dimensional QCD on the lattice. Correlation functions as well as visualization of monopole currents in the maximally Abelian gauge emphasize their topological origin and gauge invariant characterization. The (anti)selfdual character of strong vacuum fluctuations is reveiled by smoothing. In full QCD, (anti)instanton positions are also centers of the local chiral condensate and quark charge densit...

Based on the dual superconductor picture, we study the confinement phenomena systematically, using the lattice QCD, the monopole-current dynamics and the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory. (1) We study the origin of abelian dominance for the confinement force in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge in terms of the gluon-field properties using the lattice QCD. In the MA gauge, the off-diagonal gluon amplitude is strongly suppressed, and the off-diagonal gluon phase tends to be ran...

We study monopoles and gluon fields in QCD in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge in the context of the dual superconductor picture for confinement. In the abelian gauge, unit-charge magnetic monopoles appear, but multi-charge monopoles do not in general cases. The appearance of the monopole is studied using the gauge-connection formalism in relation to the SU($N_c$) singular gauge transformation. The relevant role of off-diagonal gluons is found for the appearance of monopoles ...

We study color confinement properties of the multi-instanton system, which seems to carry an essence of the nonperturbative QCD vacuum. Here we assume that the multi-instanton system is characterized by the infrared suppression of instantons as $f(\rho)\sim \rho^{-5}$ for large size $\rho$. We first investigate a monopole-clustering appearing in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge by considering the correspondence between instantons and monopoles. In order to clarify the infrare...

In contrast to ensembles of singular gauge instantons, which are well known to fail to produce confinement, it is shown that effective theories based on ensembles of merons or regular gauge instantons do produce confinement. Furthermore, when the scale is set by the string tension, the action density, topological susceptibility, and glueball masses are similar to those arising in lattice QCD.
