A Hamiltonian formulation of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with $0\leq N\leq 4$ supersymmetry in terms of gauge-invariant variables is presented, generalizing earlier work on nonsupersymmetric gauge theories. Special attention is paid to the volume measure of integration (over the gauge orbit space of the fields) which occurs in the inner product for the wave functions and arguments relating it to the renormalization of the Chern-Simons level number and to mass-gaps in the...

We study a minimal model of U(N) gauged N=2 supergravity with one hypermultiplet parametrizing SO(4,1)/SO(4) quaternionic manifold. Local N=2 supersymmetry is known to be spontaneously broken to N=1 in the Higgs phase of U(1)_{graviphoton} \times U(1). Several properties are obtained of this model in the vacuum of unbroken SU(N) gauge group. In particular, we derive mass spectrum analogous to the rigid counterpart and put the entire effective potential on this vacuum in the s...

We study four dimensional $N=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories with matter multiplets. For all such models for which the gauge group is $SU(2)$, we derive the exact metric on the moduli space of quantum vacua and the exact spectrum of the stable massive states. A number of new physical phenomena occur, such as chiral symmetry breaking that is driven by the condensation of magnetic monopoles that carry global quantum numbers. For those cases in which conformal invariance is bro...

On basis of an algebraic analysis of symmetry breaking in general and the Higgs mechanism in the standard model of elementary particles we generalize the concept of symmetry breaking to systems with non-compact groups but not necessarily caused by a potential. Thereto we give some simple, but unfamiliar examples of symmetry breaking with and without potentials. The analysis of the concept of mass in space-time and in the Higgs mechanism will lead to a model unifying both stru...

We construct families of hyper-elliptic curves which describe the quantum moduli spaces of vacua of $N=2$ supersymmetric $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories coupled to $N_f$ flavors of quarks in the fundamental representation. The quantum moduli spaces for $N_f < N_c$ are determined completely by imposing $R$-symmetry, instanton corrections and the proper classical singularity structure. These curves are verified by residue and weak coupling monodromy calculations. The quantum moduli sp...

The masses of the matter fields of N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theories can be defined as parameters of deformed supersymmetry transformations. The formulation used involves central charges for the matter fields. The explicit form of the deformed supersymmetry transformations and of the invariant Lagrangian in presence of the gauge supermultiplet are constructed. This works generalizes a former one, due to the same authors, which presented the free matter case.

Considered are ${\cal N}=2\, SU(N_c)$ or $U(N_c)$ SQCD with $N_F<2N_c-1$ quark flavors with the quark mass term $m{\rm Tr}\,({\bar Q} Q)$ in the superpotential. ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry is softly broken down to ${\cal N}=1$ by the mass term $\mu_{\rm x}{\rm Tr}\,(X^2)$ of colored adjoint scalar partners of gluons, $\mu_{\rm x}\ll\Lambda_2$ ($\Lambda_2$ is the scale factor of the $SU(N_c)$ gauge coupling). There is a large number of different types of vacua in these theori...

The Coulomb branch of $N=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions is described in general by an integrable Hamiltonian system in the holomorphic sense. A natural construction of such systems comes from two-dimensional gauge theory and spectral curves. Starting from this point of view, we propose an integrable system relevant to the $N=2$ $SU(n)$ gauge theory with a hypermultiplet in the adjoint representation, and offer much evidence that it is correct. The model h...

The weak coupling spectrum of BPS saturated states of pure $N=2$ supersymmetric SU$(n)$ gauge theory is investigated. The method uses known results on the dyon spectrum of the analogous theory with $N=4$ supersymmetry, along with the action on these states of the semi-classical monodromy transformations. For dyons whose magnetic charge is not a simple root of the Lie algebra, it is found that the weak coupling region is divided into a series of domains, for which the dyons ha...

These notes are an expanded version of a short course of lectures given for graduate students in particle physics at Oxford. The level was intended to be appropriate for students in both experimental and theoretical particle physics. The purpose is to present an elementary and self-contained introduction to SUSY that follows on, relatively straightforwardly, from graduate-level courses in relativistic quantum mechanics and introductory quantum field theory. The notation adopte...
