We show that there exist finite energy, non-singular instanton solutions for five-dimensional theories with broken gauge symmetry. The soliton is supported against collapse by a non-zero electric charge. The low-energy dynamics of these solutions is described by motion on the ADHM moduli space with potential.

We propose a new prescription for computing the Nekrasov partition functions of five-dimensional theories with eight supercharges realized by gauging non-perturbative flavor symmetries of three five-dimensional superconformal field theories. The topological vertex formalism gives a way to compute the partition functions of the matter theories with flavor instanton backgrounds, and the gauging is achieved by summing over Young diagrams. We apply the prescription to calculate t...

The effective action of N=2 supersymmetric 5-dimensional supergravity arising from compactifications of M-theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds receives non-perturbative corrections from wrapped Euclidean membranes and fivebranes. These contributions can be interpreted as instanton corrections in the 5 dimensional field theory. Focusing on the universal hypermultiplet, a solution of this type is presented and the instanton action is calculated, generalizing previous results involvi...

We study the infrared physics of 5d $\cal N=1$ Yang-Mills theories compactified on $\mathbb{S}^1$, with a view toward 4d and 5d limits. Global structures of the simplest Coulombic moduli spaces are outlined, with an emphasis on how multiple planar 4d Seiberg-Witten geometries are embedded in the cigar geometry of a single 5d theory on $\mathbb{S}^1$. The Coulomb phase boundaries in the decompactification limit are given particular attention and related to how the wall-crossin...

In this paper we derive Ward-Takahashi identities from the path integral of supersymmetric five-dimensional field theories with an $SU(1,3)$ spacetime symmetry in the presence of instantons. We explicitly show how $SU(1,3)$ is enhanced to $SU(1,3)\times U(1)$ where the additional $U(1)$ acts non-perturbatively. Solutions to such Ward-Takahashi identities were previously obtained from correlators of six-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theories but where the instanton nu...

Instanton partition functions of 5d N=1 gauge theories are Witten indices for the ADHM gauged quantum mechanics with (0,4) SUSY. We derive the integral contour prescriptions for these indices using the Jeffrey-Kirwan method, for gauge theories with hypermultiplets in various representations. The results can be used to study various 4d/5d/6d QFTs. In this paper, we study 5d SCFTs which are at the UV fixed points of 5d SYM theories. In particular, we focus on the Sp(N) theories...

By considering 5--dimensional cosmological models with a bulk filled with a pressureless scalar field; equivalently dust matter, and a negative cosmological constant, we have found a regular instantonic solution which is free from any singularity at the origin of the extra--coordinate. This instanton describes 5--dimensional asymptotically anti de Sitter wormhole, when the bulk has a topology R times S^4. Compactified brane-world instantons which are built up from such instan...

We present the unrefined instanton partition functions of various 5d gauge theories with matter beyond the fundamental representation as sums over Young diagrams. By using these explicit expressions, we verify a range of identities among the instanton partition functions predicted by Higgsing procedures of fivebrane web diagrams and representation theory.

We study the quantum dynamics of N=1 supergravity in four dimensions with a compact spatial circle. Supersymmetry ensures that the perturbative contributions to the Casimir energy on the circle cancel. However, instanton contributions remain. These render supersymmetric compactification on a circle unstable and the background dynamically decompactifies back to four dimensions. The calculation provides a testing ground for some old ideas in Euclidean quantum gravity. In partic...

We report on the computation of the one-instanton contribution to the 16-point Green function of fermionic composite operators in N=4 Super YM theory. The remarkable agreement, initially found in the case of an SU(2) gauge group, with the one D-instanton contribution to the corresponding type IIB superstring amplitude on $AdS_5\times S^5$ is reviewed here. The recent extension by other authors of this result to any SU(N) gauge group and to multi-instantons in the large N limi...
