In this work we derive the asymptotic quasi-normal modes of a BTZ black hole using a quantum field theoretic Lagrangian. The BTZ black hole is a very popular system in the context of $2+1$-dimensional quantum gravity. However to our knowledge the quasi-normal modes of the BTZ black hole have been studied only in the classical domain. Here we show a way to quantize the quasi-normal modes of the BTZ black hole by mapping it to the Bateman-Feschbach-Tikochinsky oscillator and th...

This is an unconventional review article on spectral problems in black hole perturbation theory. Our purpose is to explain how to apply various known techniques in quantum mechanics to such spectral problems. The article includes analytical/numerical treatments, semiclassical perturbation theory, the (uniform) WKB method and useful mathematical tools: Borel summations, Pad\'e approximants, etc. The article is not comprehensive, but rather looks into a few examples from variou...

In this paper, we study the thermodynamics and phase transition of a BTZ black hole in a finite space region, namely a cavity. By imposing a temperature-fixed boundary condition on the wall of the cavity and evaluating the Euclidean action, we derive the thermodynamic quantities and then construct the first law of thermodynamics for a static and neutral BTZ black hole, a rotating BTZ black hole and a charged BTZ black hole, respectively. We prove that heat capacities of these...

We discuss the quasi-normal modes of massive scalar perturbations of black holes in AdS_5 in conjunction with the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the gravity side, we solve the wave equation and obtain an expression for the asymptotic form of quasi-normal frequencies. We then show that these expressions agree with those obtained from a CFT defined on $\mathbb{R} \times S^3$ in a certain scaling limit, by identifying Euclidean time with one of the periodic coordinates. This general...

We establish the existence of stationary clouds of massive test scalar fields around BTZ black holes. These clouds are zero-modes of the superradiant instability and are possible when Robin boundary conditions (RBCs) are considered at the AdS boundary. These boundary conditions are the most general ones that ensure the AdS space is an isolated system, and include, as a particular case, the commonly considered Dirichlet or Neumann-type boundary conditions (DBCs or NBCs). We ob...

In this work, we shall analyze the effects of quantum fluctuations on the properties of a BTZ black hole, in a massive theory of gravity. We will analyze this for a charged BTZ black hole in asymptotically AdS and dS space-times. The quantum fluctuations would produce thermal fluctuations in the thermodynamics of this BTZ black hole. As these fluctuations would become relevant at a sufficiently small scale, we shall discuss the effects of such thermal fluctuations on the entr...

In three dimensions, a phase transition occurs between the non-rotating BTZ black hole and the massless BTZ black hole. Further, introducing the mass of a conical singularity, we show that a transition between the non-rotating BTZ black hole and thermal AdS space is also possible.

We review the way the BTZ black hole relaxes back to thermal equilibrium after a small perturbation and how it is seen in the boundary (finite volume) CFT. The unitarity requires the relaxation to be quasi-periodic. It is preserved in the CFT but is not obvious in the case of the semiclassical black hole the relaxation of which is driven by complex quasi-normal modes. We discuss two ways of modifying the semiclassical black hole geometry to maintain unitarity: the (fractal) b...

In this work we use the quasinormal mode of a massless scalar perturbation to probe the phase transition of the charged-AdS black hole in time profile. The signature of the critical behavior of this black hole solution is detected in the isobaric process. This paper is a natural extension of [1, 2] to the time domain analysis. More precisely, our study shows a clear signal in term of the damping rate and the oscillation frequencies of the scalar field perturbation. We conclud...

We provide a complete classification of asymptotic quasinormal frequencies for static, spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes in d dimensions. This includes all possible types of gravitational perturbations (tensor, vector and scalar type) as described by the Ishibashi-Kodama master equations. The frequencies for Schwarzschild are dimension independent, while for RN are dimension dependent (the extremal RN case must be considered separately from the non-extremal case). F...
