We show how to construct supersymmetric three-generation models with gauge group and matter content of the Standard Model in the framework of non-simply-connected elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds Z. The elliptic fibration on a cover Calabi-Yau, where the model has 6 generations of SU(5) and the bundle is given via the spectral cover description, has a second section leading to the needed free involution. The relevant involution on the defining spectral data of the bu...

We study a new mechanism to dynamically break supersymmetry in the E8xE8 heterotic string. As discussed recently in the literature, a long-lived, meta-stable non-supersymmetric vacuum can be achieved in an N=1 SQCD whose spectrum contains a sufficient number of light fundamental flavors. In this paper, we present, within the context of the hidden sector of the weakly and strongly coupled heterotic string, a slope-stable, holomorphic vector bundle on a Calabi-Yau threefold for...

We give a proof of the existence of $G=SU(5)$, stable holomorphic vector bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi--Yau threefolds with fundamental group $\bbz_2$. The bundles we construct have Euler characteristic 3 and an anomaly that can be absorbed by M-theory five-branes. Such bundles provide the basis for constructing the standard model in heterotic M-theory. They are also applicable to vacua of the weakly coupled heterotic string. We explicitly present a class of three fa...

We study two aspects of the physics of heterotic Line Bundle Standard Models on smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds. First, we investigate to what degree modern moduli stabilization scenarios can affect the standard model spectrum in such compactifications. Specifically, we look at the case where some of the complex structure moduli are fixed by a choice of hidden sector bundle. In this context, we study the frequency with which the system tends to be forced to a point in moduli spa...

In this paper we present a construction of stable bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds using the method of bundle extensions. This construction applies to any given Calabi-Yau threefold with h^{1,1}>1. We give examples of stable bundles of rank 2 and 4 constructed out of pure geometric data of the given Calabi-Yau space. As an application, we find that some of these bundles satisfy the physical constraint imposed by heterotic string anomaly cancellation.

This survey provides an introduction to basic questions and techniques surrounding the topology of the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface. Through examples, we demonstrate how the structure of the cohomology ring of the moduli space leads to interesting questions of a combinatorial nature.

The constraints imposed on heterotic compactifications by global consistency and phenomenology seem to be very finely balanced. We show that weakening these constraints, as was proposed in some recent works, is likely to lead to frivolous results. In particular, we construct an infinite set of such frivolous models having precisely the massless spectrum of the MSSM and other quasi-realistic features. Only one model in this infinite collection (the one constructed in arXiv:hep...

The compactification from the eleven-dimensional Ho\v{r}ava-Witten orbifold to five-dimensional heterotic M-theory on a Schoen Calabi-Yau threefold is reviewed, as is the specific $SU(4)$ vector bundle leading to the "heterotic standard model" in the observable sector. Within the context of strongly coupled heterotic M-theory, a formalism for consistent hidden-sector bundles associated with a single line bundle is presented, and a specific line bundle is introduced as a concr...

The question of stability of the Higgs potential in the Standard Model is revisited employing advanced theoretical precision and recent experimental results. We show that the top mass and strong coupling constants are key observables in order to reach or refute absolute stability. We highlight new physics scenarios that lead to a decisive stabilisation of the Higgs sector. These proceedings summarise findings first reported in~[1,2].
