The free energy of the maximally supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory at temperature T is expected to scale, in the large N limit, as N^2 T^4 times a function of the 't Hooft coupling, f(g_{YM}^2 N). In the strong coupling limit the free energy has been deduced from the near-extremal 3-brane geometry, and its normalization has turned out to be 3/4 times that found in the weak coupling limit. In this paper we calculate the leading correction to this result in inverse powers of th...

We calculate alpha'^2-corrections to the entropy of the 5-dimensional 3-charge and the 4-dimensional 4-charge large extremal black holes using the low energy effective action of the heterotic string theory. In the 4-dimensional case, our results are in agreement with the microscopic statistical entropy both for the BPS and the non-BPS black holes. In the more interesting 5-dimensional case, where the direct microscopic stringy description is still unknown, our results for the...

In this paper, we consider an $\alpha^{\prime}$ corrected Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m AdS black hole to study thermodynamics. We study the $P-V$ criticality and thermodynamical stability of the black hole. We obtained a first-order phase transition, which may be interpreted as the large/small black hole phase transition. Therefore, we obtained a van der Waals behaviour and obtained critical points. Finally, we calculate quantum work used to resolve the information loss paradox.

Using recent results in four-derivative 5d $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity, we evaluate the regularized on-shell action of the Euclidean solution in this theory that admits a Lorentzian continuation to an AdS$_5$ black hole with one electric charge and two angular momenta. We focus on the supersymmetric limit of this solution and employ holography to show that the result can be expressed purely in terms of angular momentum fugacities and the 't Hooft anomalies for...

We construct the microstates of near-extremal black holes in AdS_5 x S^5 as gases of defects distributed in heavy BPS operators in the dual SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. These defects describe open strings on spherical D3-branes in the S^5, and we show that they dominate the entropy by directly enumerating them and comparing the results with a partition sum calculation. We display new decoupling limits in which the field theory of the lightest open strings on the D-branes becomes ...

Using the low energy limit of type IIB superstring theory, we obtain the non-extremal limit of deformed conifold geometry which is dual to the IR limit of large N thermal QCD.At low temperatures, the extremal geometry without black hole is favored while at high temperatures, the field theory is described by non-extremal black hole geometry. We compute the ten dimensional on shell action for extremal and non-extremal geometries and demonstrate that at a critical temperature $T...

We study four-derivative corrections to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity and show that they are controlled by two real constants. The solutions of the equations of motion in the two-derivative theory are not modified by the higher-derivative corrections. We use this to derive a general formula for the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the theory and show how the higher-derivative corrections affect black...

We compute the first-order $\alpha'$ corrections to a family of 4-dimensional, 4-charge, non-extremal black hole solutions of Heterotic Supergravity in the case with 3 independent charges. The solutions are fully analytic, reproduce the extremal limit previously found in the literature and, applying T-duality, they transform as expected. If we reduce to the case with a single independent charge we obtain the corrections to four embeddings of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hol...

We study the thermodynamics of the large N noncommutative super Yang-Mills theory in the strong 't Hooft coupling limit in the spirit of AdS/CFT correspondence. It has already been noticed that some thermodynamic quantities of near-extremal D3-branes with NS B fields, which are dual gravity configurations of the noncommutative ${\cal N}$=4 super Yang-Mills theory, are the same as those without B fields. In this paper, (1) we examine the $\alpha'^3 R^4$ corrections to the free...

We have obtained charged asymptotically AdS black hole solutions in Einstein Gauss Bonnet gravity in presence of string cloud. It turns out that there exist three black holes in certain range of parameters for small enough chemical potential. However, for large chemical potential, these black holes merge into a single one. The free energy of the black holes is computed from the on shell Euclidean action by subtracting the contribution of an extremal black hole. We have studie...
