Following recent developments, we employ the AdS/CFT correspondence to determine the drag force exerted on an external quark that moves through an N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma with a non-zero R-charge density (or, equivalently, a non-zero chemical potential). We find that the drag force is larger than in the case where the plasma is neutral, but the dependence on the charge is non-monotonic.

Previous studies have shown that a gauge-invariant correlation function of two chromoelectric fields connected by a straight timelike adjoint Wilson line encodes crucial information about quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that determines the dynamics of small-sized quarkonium in the medium. Motivated by the successes of holographic calculations to describe strongly coupled QGP, we calculate the analog gauge-invariant correlation function in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmet...

Deep inelastic scattering off the strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma at finite temperature can be computed within the AdS/CFT correspondence, with results which are suggestive of a parton picture for the plasma. Via successive branchings, essentially all partons cascade down to very small values of the longitudinal momentum fraction x and to transverse momenta smaller than the saturation momentum Q_s\sim T/x. This scale Q_s controls the plasma interactions ...

We present the string dual to SU(Nc) N=4 SYM, coupled to Nf massless fundamental flavors, at finite temperature and baryon density. The solution is determined by two dimensionless parameters, both depending on the 't Hooft coupling $\lambda_h$ at the scale set by the temperature T: $\epsilon_h\sim\lambda_h Nf/Nc$, weighting the backreaction of the flavor fields and $\tilde\delta\sim\lambda_h^{-1/2}nb/(Nf T^3)$, where $nb$ is the baryon density. For small values of these two p...

Using the gauge/string duality, we derive a set of Langevin equations describing the dynamics of a relativistic heavy quark moving with constant average speed through the strongly-coupled N=4 SYM plasma at finite temperature. We show that the stochasticity arises at the string world-sheet horizon, and thus is causally disconnected from the black hole horizon in the space-time metric. This hints at the non-thermal nature of the fluctuations, as further supported by the fact th...

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute a conductivity associated with massive N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplet fields at finite baryon density, propagating through an N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills plasma in the large Nc, large 't Hooft coupling limit. We do so by introducing external electric and magnetic fields coupled to baryon number and computing the resulting induced current, from which we extract the conductivity tensor. At large hypermultiplet mass we com...

We compute the average squared distance, $s^2(t)$, travelled by a light-flavour off-mass-shell coloured parton in a strongly-coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N_c)$ super-symmetric Yang Mills plasma using the gauge/string duality. In fact, we derive a closed integral expression for $s^2(t;a)$ in $AdS_3$-Schwarzschild, which interpolates between a heavy quark when $a = 0$ and a light quark when $a = 1$, that we evaluate analytically for small virtualities - labelled $s_\text{small}^...

Results from an energy loss model that includes thermal fluctuations in the energy loss for heavy quarks in a strongly-coupled plasma are shown to be qualitatively consistent with single particle data from both RHIC and LHC. The model used is the first to properly include the fluctuations in heavy quark energy loss as derived in string theory and that do not obey the usual fluctuation-dissipation relations. These fluctuations are crucial for simultaneously describing both RHI...

We study the generalized gluon distribution that governs the dynamics of quarkonium inside a non-Abelian thermal plasma characterizing its dissociation and recombination rates. This gluon distribution can be written in terms of a correlation function of two chromoelectric fields connected by an adjoint Wilson line. We formulate and calculate this object in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling using the AdS/CFT correspondence, allowing for a nonz...

The contribution presents a summary of the Gauge/Gravity approach to the study of hydrodynamic flow of the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions. Considering the ideal case of a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for which the AdS/CFT correspondence gives a precise form of the Gauge/Gravity duality, the properties of the strongly coupled expanding plasma are put in one-to-one correspondence with the metric of a 5-dimensional black hole moving away in the 5th dimensi...
