In this note we present several ideas toward the solution to the giant graviton puzzle - the apparent multiplicity of supergravity states dual to field theory chiral primary operators. We use the fact that, for certain ranges of the angular momentum, giant gravitons can be mapped into vacua of a dual theory to argue that the sphere and $AdS$ giant gravitons have very different boundary descriptions, and that an unpolarized KK graviton is unphysical in the regime where giant g...

In this note we analyze the semi-classical quantization of D3 branes in three different holographic backgrounds in type IIB string theory. The first background is Euclidean AdS$_5$ with $S^1\times S^3$ boundary accompanied with a twist to preserve supersymmetry. We work out the spectrum of fluctuations around the classical D3-brane configuration, compute its one-loop partition function, and match to the non-perturbative correction to the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ S...

We study correlation functions of two AdS giant gravitons in AdS$_5\times S^5$ and a BPS supergravity mode using holography. In the gauge theory these are described by BPS correlators of Schur polynomials of fully-symmetric representations and a single trace operator. We find full agreement between the semiclassical gravity and gauge theory computations at large $N$, for both diagonal and off-diagonal structure constants. Our analysis in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM provides a simpler...

In Conformal Field Theories with a gravitational AdS dual it is possible to calculate the entanglement entropy of a region $A$ holographically by using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. In this work we consider systems that are in a pure state that is not the vacuum. We study in particular the 2D Conformal Field Theory dual to type IIB string theory on AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ and focus on the $1/4$-BPS states described holographically by the 2-charge microstate geometries. We...

We propose gauge theory operators built using a complex Matrix scalar which are dual to brane-anti-brane systems in $AdS_5 \times S^5 $, in the zero coupling limit of the dual Yang-Mills. The branes involved are half-BPS giant gravitons. The proposed operators dual to giant-anti-giant configurations satisfy the appropriate orthogonality properties. Projection operators in Brauer algebras are used to construct the relevant multi-trace Matrix operators. These are related to the...

We show that for every Sasaki-Einstein manifold, $M_5$, the AdS$_5\times M_5$ background of type IIB supergravity admits two universal deformations leading to supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions. One class of solutions describes an AdS$_4$ domain wall in AdS$_5$ and is dual to a Janus configuration with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. The other class of backgrounds is of the form AdS$_4\times S^1\times M_5$ with a non-trivial SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy for the IIB axio-dilaton ...

We present an extensive analysis on several string solutions in AdS_5 x Ypq and find some interesting properties of their energy-spin relations. Their energy depends always on the parameter a(p,q) which characterizes these manifolds. The range of this parameter for the string solutions is constrained by the Sasaki-Einstein constraints that the solutions should satisfy. Hence some string solutions we find are not valid for the whole class of Ypq manifolds. For some of our solu...

We introduce a class of supersymmetric cycles in spacetimes of the form AdS times a sphere or $T^{1,1}$ which can be considered as generalizations of the giant gravitons. Branes wrapped on these cycles preserve $1\over 2$, $1\over 4$ or $1\over 8$ of the supersymmetry. On the CFT side these configurations correspond to superpositions of the large number of BPS states.

We study some of the properties of dual giant gravitons - D2-branes wrapped on an $S^{2}\subset AdS_{4}$ - in type IIA string theory on $AdS_{4}\times \mathbb{CP}^{3}$. In particular we confirm that the spectrum of small fluctuations about the giant is both real and independent of the size of the graviton. We also extend previously developed techniques for attaching open strings to giants to this D2-brane giant and focus on two particular limits of the resulting string sigma ...

We study supersymmetric branes in AdS_7 x S^4 and AdS_4 x S^7. We show that in the former case the membranes should be viewed as M5 branes with fluxes and we identify two types of such fivebranes (they are analogous to giant gravitons and to dual giants). In AdS_4 x S^7 we find both M5 branes with fluxes and freestanding stacks of membranes. We also go beyond probe approximation and construct regular supergravity solutions describing geometries produced by the branes. The met...
