We use freely acting asymmetric orbifolds of type IIB string theory to construct a class of theories in five dimensions with eight supercharges whose moduli spaces for vector multiplets and hypermultiplets can be determined exactly. We argue that no quantum corrections to these moduli spaces arise. We focus on examples in which all moduli are in the NS-NS sector, while all fields from the R-R sector become massive. The full symmetry group of the moduli space is then determine...

Asymmetric heterotic orbifolds are discussed from the worldsheet perspective. Starting from Buscher's gauging of a theory of D compact bosons the duality covariant description of Tseytlin is obtained after a non-Lorentz invariant gauge fixing. A left-over of the gauge symmetry can be used to removed the doubled constant zero modes so that D physical target space coordinate remain. This can be thought of as the worldsheet realization of the strong constraint of double field th...

We investigate the following three consistency conditions for constructing string theories on orbifolds: i) the invariance of the energy-momentum tensors under twist operators, ii) the duality of amplitudes and iii) modular invariance of partition functions. It is shown that this investigation makes it possible to obtain the general class of consistent orbifold models, which includes a new class of orbifold models.

We review the stabilisation of complex structure moduli in Type IIA orientifolds, especially on $T^6 / (\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_6^\prime \times \Omega \mathcal{R})$ with discrete torsion, via deformations of $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold singularities. While D6-branes in SO(2N) and USp(2N) models always preserve supersymmetry and thus give rise to flat directions, in an exemplary Pati-Salam model with only U(N) gauge groups ten out of the 15 deformation m...

We present several classes of new 6d string theories which arise via branes at orbifold singularities. They have compact moduli spaces, associated with tensor multiplets, given by Weyl alcoves of non-Abelian groups. We discuss T-duality and Matrix model applications upon compactification.

We classify discrete modular symmetries in the effective action of Type IIB string on toroidal orientifolds with three-form fluxes, emphasizing on $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2^\prime)$ orientifold backgrounds. On the three-form flux background, the modular group is spontaneously broken down to its congruence subgroup whose pattern is severely constrained by a quantization of fluxes and tadpole cancellation conditions. We explicitly demonstrate ...

We demonstrate how to find modular discrete symmetry groups for $Z_N$ orbifolds. The $Z_7$ orbifold is treated in detail as a non-trivial example of a $(2,2)$ orbifold model. We give the generators of the modular group for this case which, surprisingly, does not contain $\sltz^3$ as had been speculated. The treatment models with discrete Wilson lines is also discussed. We consider examples which demonstrate that discrete Wilson lines affect the modular group in a non-trivial ...

An S-fold has played an important role in constructing supersymmetric field theories with interesting features. It can be viewed as a type of AdS_4 solutions of Type IIB string theory where the fields in overlapping patches are glued by elements of SL(2,Z). This paper examines three dimensional quiver theories that arise from brane configurations with an inclusion of the S-fold. An important feature of such a quiver is that it contains a link, which is the T(U(N)) theory, bet...

We study the inclusion system of the quantum deformed 2 dimensional Yang- Mills root module to the graded root module of the U-dual modular group. The irreducible representation of the U-dual modular group is the quantum deformed black brane throat. We expose the isomorphism between coherent superposition of the topological amplitude and the space of the automorphic forms of the U-dual modular group.

We revisit the definition of the 6j-symbols from the modular double of U_q(sl(2,R)), referred to as b-6j symbols. Our new results are (i) the identification of particularly natural normalization conditions, and (ii) new integral representations for this object. This is used to briefly discuss possible applications to quantum hyperbolic geometry, and to the study of certain supersymmetric gauge theories. We show, in particular, that the b-6j symbol has leading semiclassical as...
