This is a revised version of our previous paper by the same name and preprint number. It contains various changes, two figures and new results in sect.5. We propose a new approach to four-dimensional Planckian-energy scattering in which the phase of the ${\cal S}$-matrix is written---to leading order in $\hbar$ and to all orders in $R/b =Gs/J$---in terms of the surface term of the gravity action and of a boundary term for the colliding quanta. The proposal is checked at the leading order in $R/b$ and also against some known examples of scattering in strong gravitational fields.

We investigate features of perturbative gravity and supergravity by studying scattering in the ultraplanckian limit, and sharpen arguments that the dynamics is governed by long-distance physics. A simple example capturing aspects of the eikonal resummation suggests why short distance phenomena and in particular divergences or nonrenormalizability do not necessarily play a central role in this regime. A more profound problem is apparently unitarity. These considerations can be...

We discuss an alternative approach to studying the low energy limit of quantum general relativity. We investigate the low energy limit of a scattering cross-section for two massive scalar particles. Unlike calculations involving the reconstruction of the gravitational potential, our approach avoids ambiguities and is applicable in any frame. Our results are in agreement with both relativistic and non-relativistic calculations. The non-analytic parts of scattering amplitudes t...

We give a systematic analysis of forward scattering in 3$+$1-dimensional quantum gravity, at center of mass energies comparable or larger than the Planck energy. We show that quantum gravitational effects in this kinematical regime are described by means of a topological field theory. We find that the scattering amplitudes display a universal behaviour very similar to two dimensional string amplitudes, thereby recovering results obtained previously by 't Hooft. Finally, we di...

The multidimensional space-time with $(D-4)$ compact extra space dimensions and SM fields confined on four-dimensional brane is considered. The elastic scattering amplitude of two particles interacting by gravitational forces is calculated at superplanckian energies. A particular attention is paid to a proper account of zero (massless) graviton mode. The renormalized Born pole is reproduced in the eikonal amplitude which makes a leading contribution at small momentum transfer...

We show that for an eikonal limit of gravity in a space-time of any dimension with a non-vanishing cosmological constant, the Einstein -- Hilbert action reduces to a boundary action. This boundary action describes the interaction of shock-waves up to the point of evolution at which the forward light-cone of a collision meets the boundary of the space-time. The conclusions are quite general and in particular generalize the previous work of E. and H. Verlinde. The role of the o...

I outline motivations for believing that important quantum gravity effects lie beyond the Planck scale at both higher energies and longer distances and times. These motivations arise in part from the study of ultra-high energy scattering, and also from considerations in cosmology. I briefly summarize some inferences about such ultra-planckian physics, and clues we might pursue towards the principles of a more fundamental theory addressing the known puzzles and paradoxes of qu...

The scattering of pointlike particles at very large center of mass energies and fixed low momentum transfers, occurring due to both their electromagnetic and gravitational interactions is re-examined in the particular case when one of the particles carries magnetic charge. At Planckian center-of-mass energies, when gravitational dominance is normally expected, the presence of magnetic charge is shown to produce dramatic modifications to the scattering cross section as well as...

Astonishing cancellations take place in the calculation of high-energy scattering cross sections in quantum quadratic gravity, a quantum field theory for gravity. Tree-level differential cross sections that are minimally inclusive behave as $1/E^2$, as desired for a well-behaved UV completion. Such cross sections are calculated for the various spin states of the massless and massive graviparticles. These describe the hard scattering processes that occur in a picture involving...

We present a model for high energy two body scattering in a quantum theory of gravity. The model is applicable for center of mass energies higher than the relevant Planck scale. At impact parameters smaller than the Schwarzchild radius appropriate to the center of mass energy and total charge of the initial state, the cross section is dominated by an inelastic process in which a single large black hole is formed. The black hole then decays by Hawking radiation. The elastic cr...

Three new heuristic derivations of the Planck scale are described. They are based on basic principles or phenomena of relativistic gravity and quantum physics. The Planck scale quantities thus obtained are within one order of magnitude of the "standard" ones. We contemplate the pair creation of causal bubbles so small that they can be treated as particles, the scattering of a matter wave off the background curvature of spacetime that it induces, and the Hawking evaporation of...
