We derive the combinatorial representations of Picard group and deformation space of anti-canonical hypersurfaces of a toric variety using techniques in toric geometry. The mirror cohomology correspondence in the context of mirror symmetry is established for a pair of Calabi-Yau (CY) ${\sf n}$-spaces in toric varieties defined by reflexive polytopes for an arbitrary dimension ${\sf n}$. We further identify the Kahler cone of the toric variety and degeneration cone of CY hyper...

A Gorenstein polytope of index r is a lattice polytope whose r-th dilate is a reflexive polytope. These objects are of interest in combinatorial commutative algebra and enumerative combinatorics, and play a crucial role in Batyrev's and Borisov's computation of Hodge numbers of mirror-symmetric generic Calabi-Yau complete intersections. In this paper, we report on what is known about smooth Gorenstein polytopes, i.e., Gorenstein polytopes whose normal fan is unimodular. We cl...

One may construct a large class of Calabi-Yau varieties by taking anticanonical hypersurfaces in toric varieties obtained from reflexive polytopes. If the intersection of a reflexive polytope with a hyperplane through the origin yields a lower-dimensional reflexive polytope, then the corresponding Calabi-Yau varieties are fibered by lower-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties. A top generalizes the idea of splitting a reflexive polytope into two pieces. In contrast to the classifi...

Recent results on duality between string theories and connectedness of their moduli spaces seem to go a long way toward establishing the uniqueness of an underlying theory. For the large class of Calabi-Yau 3-folds that can be embedded as hypersurfaces in toric varieties the proof of mathematical connectedness via singular limits is greatly simplified by using polytopes that are maximal with respect to certain single or multiple weight systems. We identify the multiple weight...

Reflexive polytopes have been studied from viewpoints of combinatorics, commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. A nef-partition of a reflexive polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is a decomposition $\mathcal{P}=\mathcal{P}_1+\cdots+\mathcal{P}_r$ such that each $\mathcal{P}_i$ is a lattice polytope containing the origin. Batyrev and van Straten gave a combinatorial method for explicit constructions of mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau complete intersections obtained from nef-partitions. In t...

Using an inclusion of one reflexive polytope into another is a well-known strategy for connecting the moduli spaces of two Calabi-Yau families. In this paper we look at the question of when an inclusion of reflexive polytopes determines a torically-defined extremal transition between smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface families. We show this is always possible for reflexive polytopes in dimensions two and three. However, in dimension four and higher, obstructions can occur. This l...

We provide a complete classification up to isomorphism of all smooth convex lattice 3-polytopes with at most 16 lattice points. There exist in total 103 different polytopes meeting these criteria. Of these, 99 are strict Cayley polytopes and the remaining 4 are obtained as inverse stellar subdivisions of such polytopes. We derive a classification, up to isomorphism, of all smooth embeddings of toric threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^N$ where $N\le 15$. Again we have in total 103 such...

This article gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a relation to be the containment relation between the facets and vertices of a polytope. Also given here, are a set of matrices parameterizing the linear moduli space and another set parameterizing the projective moduli space of a combinatorial polytope.

We study the problem of maximum likelihood (ML) estimation for statistical models defined by reflexive polytopes. Our focus is on the maximum likelihood degree of these models as an algebraic measure of complexity of the corresponding optimization problem. We compute the ML degrees of all 4319 classes of three-dimensional reflexive polytopes, and observe some surprising behavior in terms of the presence of gaps between ML degrees and degrees of the associated toric varieties....
