We derive, for $N\is2$ super-Yang--Mills with gauge group $SU(2)$ and massless matter, the supersymmetric quantum mechanical models describing the time evolution of multi-monopole configurations in the low energy approximation. This is a first step towards identifying the solitonic states mapped to fundamental excitations by duality in the model with four hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation.

We consider chiral condensates in SU(2) gauge theory with broken N=2 supersymmetry and one fundamental flavor in the matter sector. Matter and gaugino condensates are determined by integrating out the adjoint field. The only nonperturbative input is the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg one-instanton superpotential. The results are consistent with those obtained by the `integrating in' procedure. We then calculate monopole, dyon, and charge condensates using the Seiberg-Witten approach. T...

We derive an exact unified formula for all condensates (quark and monopole) in the hybrid r vacua in N=2 supersymmetric QCD slightly deformed by a \mu A^2 term. The gauge group is assumed to be U(N) and the number of the quark flavors N_f subject to the condition N< N_f < 2N. In the r vacua r quarks and N-r-1 monopoles from non-overlapping subgroups of U(N) develop vacuum expectation values (r<N). We then briefly review possible dynamical regimes (confinement, screening, and ...

We study classical solutions of N=4 super Yang-Mills theories that are invariant under 1/4 of the supersymmetry generators. Expressions for the mass and electric charge of the configurations are derived as functions on the monopole moduli space. These functions also provide a method of determining the number of normalisable bosonic zero modes.

This is the 9th article in the collection of reviews "Exact results on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J.Teschner. We review the exact computations in 3D N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on the round or squashed $S^3$ and the relation between 3D partition functions and 4D superconformal indices.

These are expanded notes of lectures given at the Advanced Summer School on Modern Mathematical Physics (JINR Dubna, July 2005) and at the 8th International School-Seminar ``The actual problems of microworld physics 2005'' (Gomel-Dubna, August 2005). I review classical monopole solutions of the SU(N) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The first part is a pedagogical introduction into to the theory of non-Abelian SU(2) monopoles. In the second part I discuss a particular case of SU(3) t...

We investigate the spectral flows of the hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator in the fundamental and adjoint representations on two ensembles of pure SU(2) gauge field configurations at the same physical volume. We find several background gauge field configurations where the index of the hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator in the adjoint representation is not four times the index in the fundamental representation. This could imply a topological basis for the gluino condensate in super...

It is known that in order for a supersymmetric gauge theory to be dynamically broken a necessary but not sufficient condition is that the Witten index $(-1)^F=n_b^0-n_f^0$ is zero. In the case the Witten index is zero it is in general hard to distinguish between theories with or without dynamical supersymmetry breaking. In this work we show that for a large class of theories the cancellation of the Witten index by itself signals the formation of a quark condensate and therefo...

We define gauge theories whose gauge group includes charge conjugation as well as standard $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ transformations. When combined, these transformations form a novel type of group with a semidirect product structure. For $N$ even, we show that there are exactly two possible such groups which we dub $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N)_{\mathrm{I,II}}$. We construct the transformation rules for the fundamental and adjoint representations, allowing us to explicitly build four-d...

In $SU(N)$ gauge theories without dynamical quarks, we discuss how configurations with fractional topological charge, $\sim 1/N$, can arise in the vacuum and dominate in the confining phase. They are not solutions of the classical equations of motion, but arise as quantum solutions of the effective Lagrangian. Their size is essentially fixed, on the order of the confinement scale. We give both a general mathematical analysis and illustrative solutions. Their presence can be m...
