Recently, it has been proposed by Maldacena that large $N$ limits of certain conformal field theories in $d$ dimensions can be described in terms of supergravity (and string theory) on the product of $d+1$-dimensional $AdS$ space with a compact manifold. Here we elaborate on this idea and propose a precise correspondence between conformal field theory observables and those of supergravity: correlation functions in conformal field theory are given by the dependence of the supe...

Correlation functions of chiral primary operators and their superconformal descendants in the N=4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory are studied in detail in a one-instanton background and at large N. Whereas earlier calculations were restricted to correlation functions that are saturated by the 16 exact superconformal fermionic moduli, here the effect of the set of additional fermionic moduli associated with the embeddings of the SU(2) instanton in SU(N) is considered. T...

We explore and exploit the relation between non-planar correlators in ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills, and higher-genus closed string amplitudes in type IIB string theory. By conformal field theory techniques we construct the genus-one, four-point string amplitude in AdS$_5\times S^5$ in the low-energy expansion, dual to an ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills correlator in the 't Hooft limit at order $1/c^2$ in a strong coupling expansion. In the flat space limit, this maps onto the ...

I summarize perturbative and non-perturbative field theory tests of the holographic correspondence between type IIB superstring on AdS_5xS^5 and N=4 SYM theory. The holographic duality between D-instantons and YM instantons is briefly described. Non renormalization of two- and three-point functions of CPO's and their extremal and next-to-extremal correlators are then reviewed. Finally, partial non-renormalization of four-point functions of lowest CPO's is analyzed in view of ...

We study the four point function of the superconformal primary of the stress-tensor multiplet in four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang Mills, at large 't Hooft coupling and in a large $N$ expansion. This observable is holographically dual to four graviton amplitudes in type IIB supergravity on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. We construct the most trascendental piece of the correlator at order $N^{-6}$ and compare it with the flat space limit of the corresponding two loops amplitude...

We compute $1/\lambda$ corrections to the four-point functions of half-BPS operators in $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling $\lambda=g_\text{YM}^2 N$ using two methods. Firstly, we relate integrals of these correlators to derivatives of the mass deformed $S^4$ free energy, which was computed at leading order in large $N$ and to all orders in $1/\lambda$ using supersymmetric localization. Secondly, we use AdS/CFT to relate t...

Motivated by understanding the scattering of gravitons and their superpartners from extended $(p, q)$-strings in type IIB string theory via AdS/CFT, we study an integrated two-point function of stress tensor multiplet operators in the presence of a half-BPS line defect in ${\cal N} = 4$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We determine this integrated correlator at the five lowest non-trivial orders in $1/\sqrt{N}$ at fixed Yang-Mills coupling and $\theta$ angle. Our calculations...

Stable non-supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua of string theory are widely believed not to exist. In this letter, we analytically compute the full bosonic Kaluza-Klein spectrum around the ${\rm G_2}$-invariant non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solution of massive IIA supergravity, and show that it is perturbatively stable. We also provide evidence that six other non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solutions of massive IIA supergravity are perturbatively stable. Since ...

In order for string theory to be made compatible with the low-energy observations of a positive cosmological constant, there have been attempts to construct dS vacua in string theory which are particularly difficult to realize. Instead of attempting to find de Sitter (dS) vacuum solutions, we point to a new way to make string theory consistent with low-energy dS cosmology. In this way, string theory lives in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum (which is simple to construct) that e...

We analyse the most general bosonic supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity whose metrics are warped products of five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_5$) with a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M_{5}$, where the five-form flux vanishes, while all remaining fluxes are allowed to be non-vanishing consistent with SO(4,2) symmetry. This completes the program of classifying all supersymmetric solutions of ten and eleven-dimensional supergravity with an AdS$_5...
