Based on recent developments, in this letter we find 2+1 dimensional gauge theories with scale invariance and N=8 supersymmetry. The gauge theories are defined by a Lagrangian and are based on an infinite set of 3-algebras, constructed as an extension of ordinary Lie algebras. Recent no-go theorems on the existence of 3-algebras are circumvented by relaxing the assumption that the invariant metric is positive definite. The gauge group is non compact, and its maximally compact...

In this paper we study supersymmetric field theories on an AdS_p x S^q space-time that preserves their full supersymmetry. This is an interesting example of supersymmetry on a non-compact curved space. The supersymmetry algebra on such a space is a (p-1)-dimensional superconformal algebra, and we classify all possible algebras that can arise for p >= 3. In some AdS_3 cases more than one superconformal algebra can arise from the same field theory. We discuss in detail the spec...

We apply c-extremization, whose proof we review in full detail, to study two-dimensional N=(0,2) superconformal field theories arising from the low-energy dynamics of D3-branes wrapped on Riemann surfaces and M5-branes wrapped on four-manifolds. We compute the exact central charges of these theories using anomalies and c-extremization. In all cases we also construct AdS_3 supergravity solutions of type IIB and eleven-dimensional supergravity, which are holographic duals to th...

We proceed further with a study of open supermembrane on the AdS_{4/7} x S^{7/4} backgrounds. Open supermembrane can have M5-brane and 9-brane as Dirichlet branes. In AdS and pp-wave cases the configurations of Dirichlet branes are restricted. A classification of possible Dirichlet branes, which is given up to and including the fourth order of fermionic variable \th in hep-th/0310035, is shown to be valid even at full order of \th. We also discuss open M5-brane on the AdS_{4/...

Spacetime properties of superstrings on AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 are studied. The boundary theory is a two dimensional superconformal field theory with a large N=(4,4) supersymmetry.

The near horizon geometry of four-dimensional black holes in the dilute gas regime is AdS_3 x S^2, and the global symmetry group is SU(2) x USp(6). This is exploited to calculate their perturbation spectrum using group theoretical methods. The result is interpreted in terms of three extreme M5-branes, orthogonally intersecting over a common string. We also consider N=8 black holes in five dimensions, and compute the spectrum by explicit decoupling of the equations of motion, ...

Recently, Douglas and Taylor proposed to identify the Higgs vev of the Coulomb branch of the 4 dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with the positions of D3 branes in the AdS_5 x S^5 string theory. We extend this identification to more general configurations that preserve less supersymmetry. We show that a single D3 brane in AdS_5 x S^5 string theory can break the spacetime supersymmetry to 1/4 or even 1/8. Such configurations, interpretated as backgrounds of the SYM, also...

Through consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction, we construct 3D $\mathcal{N} =2$ gauged supergravities corresponding to twisted compactifications of M5-branes on a product of constant curvature Riemann surfaces, including K\"{a}hler-Einstein four-manifolds. We extend the reduction to fermionic supersymmetry variations in order to determine the 3D Killing spinor equations and classify all timelike supersymmetric solutions. As a by-product, we identify an infinite class of new super...

By studying various, known extrema of 1) SU(3) sectors, 2) SO(5) sectors and 3) SO(3)xSO(3) sectors of gauged N =8 supergravity in four-dimensions, one finds that the deformation of seven sphere \S^7 gives rise to non-trivial renormalization group(RG) flow in three-dimensional boundary conformal field theory from UV fixed point to IR fixed point. For SU(3) sectors, this leads to four-parameter subspace of the supergravity scalar-gravity action and we identify one of the eigen...

M-theory on $AdS_7 \times S^4$ admits a description where the $AdS_7$ factor is constructed as a timelike Hopf fibration over a non-compact three dimensional complex projective space $\tilde{\mathbb{CP}}^3$. We consider the worldvolume theory for M5-branes at a fixed $\tilde{\mathbb{CP}}^3$ radius which, after reduction along the timelike fibre, is given by an $\Omega$-deformed Yang-Mills theory with eight supercharges. Taking the radius to infinity then induces a classical R...
