We construct a family of type IIB string backgrounds that are deformations of $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ with a "squashed" $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3$ metric supported by a combination of NSNS and RR fluxes. They have global $\rm SU(1,1) \times SU(2)$ symmetry, regular curvature, constant dilaton and preserve 8 supercharges. Upon compactification to 4 dimensions they reduce to $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric $\rm AdS_2 \times S^2$ solutions with electric and magnetic Maxwell ...

The thesis divides into three parts. The first is devoted to a careful study of very convenient superspace conventions which are a basic tool for the second part. A theorem is formulated that gives a clear statement about when the signs of a superspace calculation can be omitted. The second part describes the type II superstring using Berkovits' pure spinor formalism. The derivation of the supergravity constraints from classical BRST invariance of Berkovits and Howe is care...

We build a novel time-like coset sigma-model describing type-II superstring theory in a charged rotating black-brane background that interpolates between a locally $AdS_3$ in the IR and a linear-dilaton geometry in the UV. This allows one to perform a systematic study of holography in non-AdS backgrounds which are smoothly connected to $AdS_3$. We construct massless closed string states vertex operators in the NS-NS sector, calculate the corresponding two-point correlation fu...

We provide the first holographic evidence for the existence of a non-supersymmetric conformal manifold arising from exactly marginal but supersymmetry-breaking deformations of a superconformal three-dimensional field theory. In particular, we construct a 2-parameter non-supersymmetric deformation of a supersymmetric AdS non-geometric background in Type IIB string theory. We prove that the non-supersymmetric backgrounds are perturbatively stable and also do not suffer from var...

We extend the recently constructed NS superstring field theories in the small Hilbert space to give classical field equations for all superstring theories, including Ramond sectors. We also comment on the realization of supersymmetry in this framework.

We discuss superparticle and superstring dynamics in AdS_3 x S^3 supported by R-R 3-form background using light-cone gauge approach. Starting with the superalgebra psu(1,1|2) + psu(1,1|2) representing the basic symmetry of this background we find the light-cone superparticle Hamiltonian. We determine the harmonic decomposition of light-cone superfield describing fluctuations of type IIB supergravity fields expanded near AdS_3 x S^3 background and compute the corresponding Kal...

In the absence of NSNS three-form flux the bosonic string on a symmetric space is described by a symmetric space coset sigma-model. Such models are known to be classically integrable. We show that the integrability extends also to cases with non-zero NSNS flux (respecting the isometries) provided that the flux satisfies a condition of the form H_{abc}H^{cde}~R_{ab}^{de}. We then turn our attention to the type II Green-Schwarz superstring on a symmetric space. We prove that if...

We proceed to study Yang-Baxter deformations of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ superstring with the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We make a general argument on the supercoset construction and present the master formula to describe the dilaton in terms of classical $r$-matrices. The supercoset construction is explicitly performed for some classical $r$-matrices and the full backgrounds including the Ramond-Ramond (R-R) sector and dilaton are derived. Within the class of abelian $r$-...

We show that the solution of a pre-geometric strongly coupled quantum mechanical model describing K D-particles in the presence of N D4-branes in type IIA string theory, at fixed K and large N, yields an effective action describing the motion of the K D-particles in a classical ten-dimensional curved space-time. By comparing the effective action with the non-abelian D-brane action in an arbitrary supergravity background, we identify the metric, dilaton and Ramond-Ramond field...

We present a new Type IIB supergravity background of the warped form AdS$_4\times \mathcal{M}_6$ with dilaton, $B$-field and all Ramond-Ramond fluxes turned on. We obtain the solution by applying non-Abelian T-duality to a certain representative of a class of AdS$_4$ backgrounds in massive IIA supergravity. By explicitly constructing the Killing spinor of the seed solution and using an argument involving Kosmann spinorial Lie derivative we demonstrate that the background is s...
