Assume that the compact Riemannian spin manifold $(M^n,g)$ admits a $G$-structure with characteristic connection $\nabla$ and parallel characteristic torsion ($\nabla T=0$), and consider the Dirac operator $D^{1/3}$ corresponding to the torsion $T/3$. This operator plays an eminent role in the investigation of such manifolds and includes as special cases Kostant's ``cubic Dirac operator'' and the Dolbeault operator. In this article, we describe a general method of computation...

We prove upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator and the Laplace operator on 2-dimensional tori. In particluar we give a lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator for non-trivial spin structures. It is the only explicit estimate for eigenvalues of the Dirac operator known so far that uses information about the spin structure. As a corollary we obtain lower bounds for the Willmore functional of a torus embedded into S_3. In the fin...

We extend several classical eigenvalue estimates for Dirac operators on compact manifolds to noncompact, even incomplete manifolds. This includes Friedrich's estimate for manifolds with positive scalar curvature as well as the author's estimate on surfaces.

We give lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the submanifold Dirac operator in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic curvature expressions. We also show that the limiting cases give rise to a class generalizing that of Killing spinors. We conclude by translating these results in terms of intrinsic twisted Dirac operators.

The aim of the lectures is to introduce first-year Ph.D. students and research workers to the theory of the Dirac operator, spinor techniques, and their relevance for the theory of eigenvalues in Riemannian geometry. Topics: differential operators on manifolds, index of elliptic operators, Dirac operator, index problem for manifolds with a boundary, index of the Dirac operator and anomalies, spectral asymmetry and Riemannian geometry, spectral or local boundary conditions for...

We study boundary value problems for the Dirac operator on Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds of bounded geometry and with noncompact boundary. This generalizes a part of the theory of boundary value problems by C. B\"ar and W. Ballmann for complete manifolds with closed boundary. As an application, we derive the lower bound of Hijazi-Montiel-Zhang, involving the mean curvature of the boundary, for the spectrum of the Dirac operator on the noncompact boundary of a Spin$^c$ manifol...

In this paper we will prove new extrinsic upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on an isometrically immersed surface $M^2 \hookrightarrow {\Bbb R}^3$ as well as intrinsic bounds for 2-dimensional compact manifolds of genus zero and genus one. Moreover, we compare the different estimates of the eigenvalue of the Dirac operator for special families of metrics.

We derive new lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator of an oriented hypersurface $\Sigma$ bounding a noncompact domain in a spin asymptotically flat manifold (M n , g) with nonnegative scalar curvature. These bounds involve the boundary capacity potential and, in some cases, the capacity of $\Sigma$ in (M n , g) yielding several new geometric inequalities. The proof of our main result relies on an estimate for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator of...

In K\"ahler-Einstein case of positive scalar curvature and even complex dimension, an improved lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator is given. It is shown by a general construction that there are manifolds for which this new lower bound itself is the first eigenvalue.

Let $(M,g,\si)$ be a compact Riemannian spin manifold of dimension $\geq 2$. For any metric $\tilde g$ conformal to $g$, we denote by $\tilde\lambda$ the first positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on $(M,\tilde g,\si)$. We show that $$\inf_{\tilde{g} \in [g]} \tilde\lambda \Vol(M,\tilde g)^{1/n} \leq (n/2) \Vol(S^n)^{1/n}.$$ This inequality is a spinorial analogue of Aubin's inequality, an important inequality in the solution of the Yamabe problem. The inequality is alre...
