We study the long-time behaviour of the focusing cubic NLS on $\R$ in the Sobolev norms $H^s$ for $0 < s < 1$. We obtain polynomial growth-type upper bounds on the $H^s$ norms, and also limit any orbital $H^s$ instability of the ground state to polynomial growth at worst; this is a partial analogue of the $H^1$ orbital stability result of Weinstein. In the sequel to this paper we generalize this result to other nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations. Our arguments are based on the ``$I$-method'' from our earlier papers, which pushes down from the energy norm, as well as an ``upside-down $I$-method'' which pushes up from the $L^2$ norm.

We continue the study (initiated in \cite{ckstt:7}) of the orbital stability of the ground state cylinder for focussing non-linear Schr\"odinger equations in the $H^s(\R^n)$ norm for $1-\eps < s < 1$, for small $\eps$. In the $L^2$-subcritical case we obtain a polynomial bound for the time required to move away from the ground state cylinder. If one is only in the $H^1$-subcritical case then we cannot show this, but for defocussing equations we obtain global well-posedness an...

We consider the cubic Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NLS) in one space dimension, either focusing or defocusing. We prove that the solutions satisfy a-priori local in time Hs bounds in terms of the Hs size of the initial data for s >=-1/4 . This improves earlier results of Christ-Colliander-Tao [2] and of the authors [12]. The new ingredients are a localization in space and local energy decay, which we hope to be of independent interest.

We consider the cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation in one space dimension, either focusing or defocusing. We prove that the solutions satisfy a-priori local in time H^s bounds in terms of the H^s size of the initial data for s greater than or equal to -1/6.

This article explores the questions of long time orbital stability in high order Sobolev norms of plane wave solutions to the NLSE in the defocusing case.

We consider the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) on the two-dimensional torus. The equation admits a special family of elliptic invariant quasiperiodic tori called finite-gap solutions. These are inherited from the integrable 1D model (cubic NLS on the circle) by considering solutions that depend only on one variable. We study the long-time stability of such invariant tori for the 2D NLS model and show that, under certain assumptions and over sufficient...

In this paper we study the local and global regularity properties of the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) on the half line with rough initial data. These properties include local and global wellposedness results, local and global smoothing results and the behavior of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. In particular, we prove that the nonlinear part of the cubic NLS on the half line is smoother than the initial data. The gain in regularity coincides with ...

In this article we consider the Cauchy problem for the cubic focusing nonlinear Schr\"o\-dinger (NLS) equation on the line with initial datum close to a particular $N$-soliton. Using inverse scattering and the $\bar{\partial}$ method we establish the decay of the $L^{\infty}$ norm of the residual term in time.

We consider Nonlinear Schrodinger type equations on $S^1$. In this paper, we obtain polynomial bounds on the growth in time of high Sobolev norms of their solutions. The key is to derive an iteration bound based on a frequency decomposition of the solution. This iteration bound is different than the one used earlier in the work of Bourgain, and is less dependent on the structure of the nonlinearity. We first look at the defocusing NLS equation with nonlinearity of degree $\ge...

We study growth of higher Sobolev norms of solutions to the one-dimensional periodic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). By a combination of the normal form reduction and the upside-down I-method, we establish \|u(t)\|_{H^s} \lesssim (1+|t|)^{\alpha (s-1)+} with \alpha = 1 for a general power nonlinearity. In the quintic case, we obtain the above estimate with \alpha = 1/2 via the space-time estimate due to Bourgain [4], [5]. In the cubic case, we concretely compute the ter...

A characteristic of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), when defined so that the space variable is the multi-dimensional square (hence rational) torus, is that there exist solutions that start with arbitrarily small norms Sobolev norms and evolve to develop arbitrarily large modes at later times; this phenomenon is recognized as a weak energy transfer to high modes for the NLSE. In this paper, we show that when the system is considered on an irration...
