In this paper, we give a purely cohomological interpretation of the extension problem for associative algebras; that is the problem of extending an associative algebra by another associative algebra. We then give a similar interpretation of infinitesimal deformations of extensions. In particular, we consider infinitesimal deformations of representations of an associative algebra.

In this paper we construct a deformation quantization of the algebra of polynomials of an arbitrary (regular and non regular) coadjoint orbit of a compact semisimple Lie group. The deformed algebra is given as a quotient of the enveloping algebra by a suitable ideal.

One of the questions investigated in deformation theory is to determine to which algebras can a given associative algebra be deformed. In this paper we investigate a different but related question, namely: for a given associative finite-dimensional C-algebra A, find algebras N which can be deformed to A. We develop a simple method which produces associative and flat deformations to investigate this question. As an application of this method we answer a question of Michael Wem...

This paper is devoted to deformation theory of graded Lie algebras over $\Z$ or $\Z_l$ with finite dimensional graded pieces. Such deformation problems naturally appear in number theory. In the first part of the paper, we use Schlessinger criteria for functors on Artin local rings in order to obtain universal deformation rings for deformations of graded Lie algebras and their graded representations. In the second part, we use a version of Schlessinger criteria for functors on...

We develop the deformation theory of A_\infty algebras together with \infty inner products and identify a differential graded Lie algebra that controls the theory. This generalizes the deformation theories of associative algebras, A_\infty algebras, associative algebras with inner products, and A_\infty algebras with inner products.

We study non-trivial deformations of the natural action of the Lie algebra $\mathrm{Vect}({\mathbb R}^n)$ on the space of differential forms on ${\mathbb R}^n$. We calculate abstractions for integrability of infinitesimal multi-parameter deformations and determine the commutative associative algebra corresponding to the miniversal deformation in the sense of \cite{ff}.

We give a selective survey of topics in algebraic deformation theory ranging from its inception to current times. Throughout, the numerous contributions of Murray Gerstenhaber are emphasized, especially the common themes of cohomology, infinitesimal methods, and explicit global deformation formulas.

We consider deformations of finite or infinite dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic 0. There is substantial confusion in the literature if one tries to describe all the non-equivalent deformations of a given Lie algebra. It is known that there is in general no "universal" deformation of the Lie algebra L with a commutative algebra base A with the property that for any other deformation of L with base B there exists a unique homomorphism f: A -> B that induc...

We propose a simple approach to formal deformations of associative algebras. It exploits the machinery of multiplicative coresolutions of an associative algebra A in the category of A-bimodules. Specifically, we show that certain first-order deformations of A extend to all orders and we derive explicit recurrent formulas determining this extension. In physical terms, this may be regarded as the deformation quantization of noncommutative Poisson structures on A.

We extend the classical concept of deformation of an associative algebra, as introduced by Gerstenhaber, by using monoidal linear categories and cocommutative coalgebras as foundational tools. To achieve this goal, we associate to each cocommutative coalgebra $C$ and each linear monoidal category $\M$, a $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal category $\M_{C}$. This construction is functorial: any coalgebra morphism $\iota:C\to\widetilde{C}$ induces a strict monoidal functor $\iota^{*}:\M...
