We introduce a ZFC method that enables us to build spaces (in fact special dense subspaces of certain Cantor cubes) in which we have "full control" over all dense subsets. Using this method we are able to construct, in ZFC, for each uncountable regular cardinal $\lambda$ a 0-dimensional $T_2$, hence Tychonov, space which is $\mu$-resolvable for all $\mu < \lambda$ but not $\lambda$-resolvable. This yields the final (negative) solution of a celebrated problem of Ceder and Pe...

In the context of generalized descriptive set theory, we systematically compare and analyze various notions of Polish-like spaces and standard $\kappa$-Borel spaces for $\kappa$ an uncountable (regular) cardinal satisfying $\kappa^{<\kappa} = \kappa$. As a result, we obtain a solid framework where one can develop the theory in full generality. We also provide natural characterizations of the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. Some of the results obtained considerably extend...

We will prove that there exists a model of ZFC+``c= omega_2'' in which every M subseteq R of cardinality less than continuum c is meager, and such that for every X subseteq R of cardinality c there exists a continuous function f:R-> R with f[X]=[0,1]. In particular in this model there is no magic set, i.e., a set M subseteq R such that the equation f[M]=g[M] implies f=g for every continuous nowhere constant functions f,g:R-> R .

Let I be an ideal of subsets of a Polish space X, containing all singletons and possessing a Borel basis. Assuming that I does not satisfy ccc, we consider the following conditions (B), (M) and (D). Condition (B) states that there is a disjoint family F subseteq P(X) of size c, consisting of Borel sets which are not in I. Condition (M) states that there is a function f:X-> X with f^{-1}[{x}] notin I for each x in X. Provided that X is a group and I is invariant, condition (D)...

Our aim is to investigate spaces with sigma-discrete and meager dense sets, as well as selective versions of these properties. We construct numerous examples to point out the differences between these classes while answering questions of Tkachuk [30], Hutchinson [17] and the authors of [8].

Let X_t be a totally disconnected subset of the real line R for each t in R. We construct a partition {Y_t | t in R} of R into nowhere dense Lebesgue null sets Y_t such that for every t in R there exists an increasing homeomorphism from X_t onto Y_t. In particular, the real line can be partitioned into 2^{aleph_0} Cantor sets and also into 2^{aleph_0} mutually non-homeomorphic compact subspaces. Furthermore we prove that for every cardinal number k with 2 \leq k \leq 2^{aleph...

For a compact set $K\subset \mathbb{R}^1$ and a family $\{C_\lambda\}_{\lambda\in J}$ of dynamically defined Cantor sets sufficiently close to affine with $\text{dim}_H\, K+\text{dim}_H\, C_\lambda>1$ for all $\lambda\in J$, under natural technical conditions we prove that the sum $K+C_\lambda$ has positive Lebesgue measure for almost all values of the parameter $\lambda$. As a corollary, we show that generically the sum of two affine Cantor sets has positive Lebesgue measure...

In this paper, we are interested in parallels to the classical notions of special subsets in $\R$ defined in the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces ($2^\kappa$ and $\kappa^\kappa$). We consider generalizations of the well-known classes of special subsets, like Lusin sets, strongly null sets, concentrated sets, perfectly meagre sets, $\sigma$-sets, $\gamma$-sets, sets with Menger, Rothberger or Hurewicz property, but also of some less-know classes like $X$-small sets, meagre ...

A pattern is called universal in another collection of sets, when every set in the collection contains some linear and translated copy of the original pattern. Paul Erd\H{o}s proposed a conjecture that no infinite set is universal in the collection of sets with positive measure. This paper explores an analogous problem in the topological setting. Instead of sets with positive measure, we investigate the collection of dense $G_{\delta}$ sets and in the collection of generic se...
