We give noncommutative versions of the Redfield-P\'olya theorem in WSym, the algebra of word symmetric functions, and in other related combinatorial Hopf algebras.

We propose several constructions of commutative or cocommutative Hopf algebras based on various combinatorial structures, and investigate the relations between them. A commutative Hopf algebra of permutations is obtained by a general construction based on graphs, and its non-commutative dual is realized in three different ways, in particular as the Grossman-Larson algebra of heap ordered trees. Extensions to endofunctions, parking functions, set compositions, set partitions...

We construct Hopf algebras whose elements are representations of combinatorial automorphism groups, by generalising a theorem of Zelevinsky on Hopf algebras of representations of wreath products. As an application we attach symmetric functions to representations of graph automorphism groups, generalising and refining Stanley's chromatic symmetric function.

The main ideas developed in this habilitation thesis consist in endowing combinatorial objects (words, permutations, trees, Young tableaux, etc.) with operations in order to construct algebraic structures. This process allows, by studying algebraically the structures thus obtained (changes of bases, generating sets, presentations, morphisms, representations), to collect combinatorial information about the underlying objects. The algebraic structures the most encountered here ...

Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, Lam and Pylyavskyy studied six combinatorial Hopf algebras that can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. They described the bialgebra structure in all cases that were not yet known but left open the question of ...

In this paper, we present a generalization of well-established results regarding symmetries of $\Bbbk$-algebras, where $\Bbbk$ is a field. Traditionally, for a $\Bbbk$-algebra $A$, the group $\Bbbk$-algebra automorphisms of $A$ captures the symmetries of $A$ via group actions. Similarly, the Lie algebra of derivations of $A$ captures the symmetries of $A$ via Lie algebra actions. In this paper, given a category $\mathcal{C}$ whose objects possess $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal categ...

This article serves as an introduction to several recent developments in the study of quasisymmetric functions. The focus of this survey is on connections between quasisymmetric functions and the combinatorial Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, appearances of quasisymmetric functions within the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and analogues of symmetric functions. Topics include the significance of quasisymmetric functions in representation theory (such as re...

We survey Hopf algebras and their generalizations. In particular, we compare and contrast three well-studied generalizations (quasi-Hopf algebras, weak Hopf algebras, and Hopf algebroids), and two newer ones (Hopf monads and hopfish algebras). Each of these notions was originally introduced for a specific purpose within a particular context; our discussion favors applicability to the theory of dynamical quantum groups. Throughout the note, we provide several definitions and e...

An analysis of symmetric function theory is given from the perspective of the underlying Hopf and bi-algebraic structures. These are presented explicitly in terms of standard symmetric function operations. Particular attention is focussed on Laplace pairing, Sweedler cohomology for 1- and 2-cochains, and twisted products (Rota cliffordizations) induced by branching operators in the symmetric function context. The latter are shown to include the algebras of symmetric functions...

This paper presents a noncommutative theory of symmetric functions, based on the notion of quasi-determinant. We begin with a formal theory, corresponding to the case of symmetric functions in an infinite number of independent variables. This allows us to endow the resulting algebra with a Hopf structure, which leads to a new method for computing in descent algebras. It also gives unified reinterpretation of a number of classical constructions. Next, we study the noncommutati...
